Toanswerthesequestions,ElizabethDunn,apsychologistattheUniversityofBritishColumbiainVancouver,andtwocolleaguesaskedpeoplehowmuchmoneytheymake,howtheyspenttheirmoneyandhowhappytheywere.
Intheirsampleof632Americans,theresearchersfoundthatanaverageofnearly1%ofthemonthlybudgetwasspentonwhatDunnterms“prosocialspending”–thatis,giftsforothersanddonationstocharity.Overallspendinglevelswerenotrelatedtohappiness,butprosocialspendingwas.
Afurtherstudywasalsodoneamong46collegestudents.Theresearchersgavethesestudentsanenvelopewith$5or$20,andtoldthemtoeitherspendmoneyonthemselvesoronfriends.Attheendoftheday,studentswhohadgivenawaytheirmoneywerehappierthanstudentswhospentitonthemselves.Theamountofmoneytheyreceivedandspenthadnoeffectontheirhappiness.
