Thefirstknownmodernreportoftherockcarvingswasin1909whenWaltherLaenghappenedupontwodecoratedrocksinCapodiPonte.Scholarsonlytookinterestinthedrawingsinthe1920s.Morerockswithengravingsweresoonfoundintheareasnearbyandresearchintotheirhistorybegan.Inthe1930scomprehensivestudycampaignswereundertaken.
ItwasaftertheSecondWorldWarthatthecatalogingandmappingoftheengravingsbegan.ThistaskwastakenupbyvariousteamsofexpertsfromItalyandothercountriesthatwereledbyLaeng.In1955preservationworkontherocksbegan.
In1968,alargeseriesofconferenceswereheldwherescholarsfromallovertheworldmettodiscusstherockdrawings,whichgiveussomeideaofwhatvarioussocietiesofthepastmighthavebeenlike.
