ButinAmerica,educationreformprogramsfocusonhowwellstudentsdoinexamsinsteadofbringingthemintocontactwiththeworkingworld.HarvardEducationschoolprofessorRobertSchwartzhascriticizededucationreformersfortryingtoplaceallgraduatesdirectlyonthefour-yearcollegetrack.Schwartzarguedthatthisapproachleavesthecountry’smostvulnerable(易受影响的)kidswithnojobsandnoskills.
Schwartzbelievedthatthebestcareerprogramsencouragekidstogoforhighereducationwhilealsoteachthemvaluablepracticalskillsathighschool.JamesMadisonHighSchoolinNewYork,forexample,encouragesstudentstochooseclassesoncareer-basedcourses.Theschoolthenhelpsthemgainon-the-job

Determinedtomakeschoolmorerelatedtotheworkplace,RooseveltHighSchoolinPortland,Oregon,developedaschool-to-workprogram.Intheirfirstyear,studentsareofferedsomejobpathwaysinnaturalresources,humanservices,healthcare,business,artsandmunication.Thefollowingyear,eachstudentchoosesoneofthepathwaysandexaminesitindepth,spendingthreehoursaweekwatchingsomeoneonthejob.Suchaprogramisalsoinpracticeinsomeotherstates.
Theschool-to-workprogramisbuiltaroundapartnership.Forexample,EastmanKodak,amajoremployerinColorado,introducesstudentstobusinessbyhelpingthemconstructamodelcityusingsmallpiecesofwood.“Thechildrenusethemodelstodecideonthebestplacetosetupschools,”saysLucilleMantelli,directorforEastmanKodakinColorado.Kodakintroducesmathbyteachingfifthgraderstousetheirpocketmoneyproperly.Theyalsoprovideone-on-onejobwatchingexperiencesandofferchancesofpracticeforhighschooljuniorsandseniors.“Studentsetotheworkplacetwoorthreehoursaweek,”explainsMantelli.“Theydothejobforus.Wepaythemandtheygetschoolcredits(学分).Wealsogivethemourviewsontheirperformanceanddevelopmentalopportunities.”
