Fordecades,publichealthofficialshavepuzzledoverasurprisingfactaboutHIV:
Onlyabout10-20percentofinfantswhoarebreastfedbyinfectedmotherscatchthevirus.Testsshow,though,thatHIVisindeedpresentinbreastmilk,sothesechildrenareexposedtothevirusmultipletimesdailyforthefirstseveralmonthsoftheirlives.
Now,agroupofscientistsanddoctorsfromDukeUniversityhavefiguredoutwhythesebabiesdon'tgetinfected.HumanbreastmilknaturallycontainsaproteincalledTenascinCthatneutralizesHIVand,inmostcases,preventsitfrombeingpassedfrommothertochild.Eventually,theysay,theproteincouldpotentiallybevaluableasanHIV-fightingtoolforbothinfantsandadultsthatareeitherHIV-positiveoratriskofcontractingtheinfection.
Theresearch,publishedinProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences,wasinspiredbypreviousworkbyotherresearchersshowingthat,bothintissuecultures(组织培养)andlivemice,breastmilkfromHIV-negativemotherswasnaturallyendowedwithHIV-fightingproperties.Scientistssuggestedthatafewdifferentproteinsinthemilkcouldpotentiallyberesponsible,butnooneknewwhichone.
Aspartofthestudy,theresearchersdividedbreastmilkintosmallerfractions(部分)madeupofspecificproteinsviaanumberoffilters(过滤)-separatingtheproteinsbysize,electricalchargeandothercharacteristics-andtestedwhichofthesefractions,whenaddedtoatissueculture,preventedthecellsfrombeinginfectedbyHIVEventually,theyfoundthatoneparticularproteinwaspresentinalltheHIV-resistantfractionsbutinnoneoftheothers:

TenascinCworksbyblockingakeyproteinonHIV'senvelopethatnormallytiesuptoareceptoronaTcell'smembranecalledCCR5.Indoingso,TenascinCpreventsHIVfrommixingwiththeTcellandinjectingitsRNAinside.

In1947agroupoffamouspeoplefromtheartworldheadedbyanAustrianconductordecidedtoholdaninternationalfestivalofmusic,danceandtheatreinEdinburgh.TheideawastoreuniteEuropeaftertheSecondWorldWar.
Atthesametime,the"Fringe"appearedasachallengetotheofficialfestival.Eighttheatregroupsturnedupuninvitedin1947,inthebeliefthateveryoneshouldhavetherighttoperform,andtheydidsoinapublichousedisusedforyears.
Soon,groupsofstudentsfirstlyfromEdinburghUniversity,andlaterfromtheuniversitiesofOxfordandCambridge,DurhamandBirminghamweremakingthejourneytotheScottishcapitaleachsummertoperformtheatrebylittle-knownwritersofplaysinsmallchurchhallstothepeopleofEdinburgh.
Todaythe"Fringe",oncelessrecognized,hasfaroutgrownthefestivalwitharound1,500performancesoftheatre,musicanddanceoneveryoneofthe21daysitlasts.Andyearsearlyas1959,withonly19theatregroupsperforming,somesaiditwasgettingtoobig.
