DrJohnWilkinswasanaturalphilosopherwholivedfrom1614until1672.Hewascrazyaboutgettingtothemoonandmeetingthepeoplewhosurelylivedthere.WilkinsbelievedthatanythingasEarthlikeasthemoonmusthavebeencreatedbyGodforlivingbeings,andhewasdeterminedtomeetthem—despitethefactthathewasthreecenturiesaheadofhistime.
Inthe1600s,thescientificunderstandingofgravityandouterspacewaslimited.Wilkinsbelieved,likemany17thcenturyscientists,thattherewasnodifferencebetweentheatmosphereofEarthandtheconditionsinspace,andthatEarth'spullwasduetomagnetism(磁力).Itwasonlyreasonable,then,thatWilkinsbelievedatwowheeledhorsedrawnbattlecarwithwingswithenoughspeedcouldlifthighenoughoffthegroundtobreakfreeofEarth'smagneticpullandreachthemoon.
ThenWilkinsmovedontomorepressingissueswithhisremarkableabilitytothinkofnewideas:
