Atthestation,TessfindshimandconfessestomurderingAlec.Immediately,AngelformulatesaplantowalktothenorthofEngland,avoidingthemoretraveledroads,untiltheycanreachaportcityaftertheeventssurroundingthemurderareforgotten.Thetwowalkformiles,finallyhappytobeineachother'scompany.Alongtheway,theydiscoveravacanthouse,withonlyacaretakeroccasionallystoppingby.Thegreathouse,calledBramshurstCourt,isemptyofarenter,sothecoupletakesupresidence.Theyspendfivedaysinthehouseuntilthelocalcaretakerseesthemsleepinginthelargebedrooms.
