JohnCiardiwasbornin1916inBoston,Massachusetts,thechildofItalianimmigrants.HeattendedBatesCollegeandTuftsCollege(nowUniversity)andreceivedhismaster’sdegreefromtheUniversityofMichiganin1939.Heistheauthorofmorethanfortyvolumesofpoetry,amongthemTheCollectedPoemsofJohnCiardi(UniversityofArkansasPress,1997),TheBirdsofPompeii(1985),TheLittleThatIsAll(1974),PersontoPerson(1964),andOtherSkies(1947).
CiardiisperhapsbestknownforHowDoesaPoemMean?
(1959),whichbecameastandardtextforcollegeandhighschoolpoetrycourses.HealsowroteanacclaimedtranslationofDante’sDivineComedy,wasaregularcommentatoronNationalPublicRadio,andservedaseditorofSaturdayReviewformanyyears.HebeganhiscareerteachingEnglishattheUniversityofKansasCity,and,afterservingathree-yeartermintheAirForce,wentontoteachatHarvardUniversityin1946.HeremainedatHarvardastheBriggs-CopelandInstructorinEnglishuntil1953,whenheacceptedapositionatRutgersUniversity.
In1961,Ciardibrokewiththeeducationalestablishmenttodevotehimselftohisownliteraryendeavors,althoughheremainedanactiveandvisiblememberoftheacademiccommunitythroughlectures,poetryreadings,andappearancesoneducationaltelevision.Hebeganwritingchildren’spoetryasawayofgettinghisownchildreninterestedinreading.Theseworks,especiallyIMetaManWhoSangtheSillies(1961),becametremendouslypopular.
