EventhoughPierredeCoubertinintended(想要)theOlympicGamestobeaninternationaleventfrom1896inAthens(Greece),itwasonlyatthe1912GamesinStockholm(Sweden)that,forthefirsttime,theparticipants(参加者)camefromallfivecontinents.Oneyearlater,in1913,thefiveringsappearedatthetopofaletterwrittenbyPierredeCoubertin.Hedrewtheringsandcolouredthembyhand.HethendescribedthissymbolintheOlympicReviewofAugust1913.
ItwasalsoCoubertinwhohadtheideafortheOlympicflag.HepresentedtheringsandflaginJune1914inParisattheOlympicCongress.
TheFirstWorldWarpreventedtheGamesfrombeingcelebratedin1916inBerlin(Germany)asplanned.Itwasnotuntil1920inAntwerp(Belgium)thattheflaganditsfiveringscouldbeseenflyinginanOlympicstadium.
