Now,we’resittingattheoutdoorfieldsofthePontiacSilverdome,farfromanypopulatedarea,wonderingwherethisverysocialcockatiel,anAustralianparrot(澳洲鹦鹉)couldhavecomefrom.Iwalkeduptothebirdandputoutmyhand.Immediately,ithoppedonandchirpedinafriendlyway.Welookedaroundusandknewthatwecouldnotjustleaveandsupposethatthebirdwouldreturntowhereitcamefrom.Thiswasaverydomesticatedbirdthatneededhelporitwouldnotsurvive.
Theflagfootballgamehadendedsowewalkedthebirdovertoothergroupsofadultsandaskediftheyknewofanyonewhohadlostabird.Allthekidswereexcitedaboutthebirdandfeditwithsomepostgamesnacks.Thebird’snailsweregettinglongandhewaslookingprettydirty,soweknewithadbeenouthereforalongtimeandwashungry.Sinceitswingswereclipped,itcouldflyalittlebutprobablynotmorethan100yardsorsoatatry.Wealljustscratchedourheadsasagroupwonderingwhattodowiththelostbird.
Weexplainedtothekidsthatthisbirdneededourhelpsinceitwassomeone’spetandwouldnotknowhowtogetitsownfood,anditcouldnotflywellsinceitswingswereclipped.Thekidsunderstood,andallofthemwantedtotakethebirdhome!
Theparentshowever,knewthiswasnotagoodchoiceasonehadalargedog,anothertwocats,etc.WeexplainedtothekidsthatoneofuscouldtakethebirdhomeforthenightandthenbringittotheHumaneSocietyinthemorninginhopestoconnectittoitsowners.Wecouldn’tkeepthebird.Itwasn’tours.Thiswastoughforthekidstounderstandatfirst.Wecouldn’tjustleavethebirdeither.Therewasnowayitcouldattenditself.ThegroupofussataroundtheSilverdomepracticefieldsforquiteawhiletryingtodeterminethebestcourseofchoiceforthelostbird.Itwasgettingdarkoutbutnoonewaswillingtoleavethatparkinglotuntilwehadagameplanforhowtohelpthebird.
Theownerofthefootballleague,ChrisNovak,offeredtotakethebird.Itwasextremelyniceofhimandhereallysteppedintohelpwhilealltherestofuswhohadkidstuggingonourshirtsandbeggingtotakeithome.Wetookaboxandputabunchofholesinitandhebroughtithomeforthenight.Anothermomwentonlineandfoundafamilythathadlostabirdthatlookedjustliketheonewe’dfound.SheemailedtheinfotoChriswhogotintouchwiththefamilyandthenextday,reunitedthebirdwiththefamilythatlostitalmost3weeksearlier!
WhenChrisemailedustoletusknow,wecouldnotbelievethatthisbirdhadtraveledfromTheRochesterTienkenareaallthewaytotheSilverdome!
Weweresohappytobeabletosavethisbirdandgetitbacktoitsfamily.Ishowedmykidstheemailabouthowtheotherfamilygottheirpetback.Thefamilyhas3kidswhoweresohappytoseetheirbird.Mykidsrealizedwhataniceendingthisstoryhad.Notonlyhadwebeenabletosavethisbird’slife,butwewereabletobringitbacktothefamilythatlovesandmisseshim.
Thelifelessoninthemissingbirdstoryseemedtomissitsmarkwithmykidsatfirst.Theywerealittlebummedoutthattheycouldn’tkeepthelostbird.Iexplainedtothemthatwhenananimalorsomeoneneedshelp,youjustcan’tturnablindeyeandhopeeverythingworksoutOK.The“lostbirdincident”wasalsoaremindertothemthatteamworkandthekindnessofstrangerscanmakeaworldofdifferenceandthatagroupofwell-meaningstrangerscanworktogethertohelpsomeone.Itwasn’taheroicact,butonethatIknewhadsunkinwithmykidswhentheyrealizedthattryingtohelpwasthebestandonlyrealcourseofaction.
