UncleSam,afiguresymbolizingtheUnitedStates,isportrayedasatall,white-hairedmanwithagoatee.Heisoftendressedinred,white,andblue,andwearsatophat.
TheexactoriginsofUncleSamasasymbolfortheUnitedStatesareunknown.ButthemostwidelyacceptedtheoryisthatUncleSamwasnamedafterSamuelWilson.
DuringtheWarof1812,SamuelWilsonwasabusinessmanfromTroy,NYthatsuppliedtheU.S.Armywithbeefinbarrels.Thebarrelswerelabeled"U.S."Whenaskedwhattheinitialsstoodfor,oneofWilson'sworkerssaiditstoodforUncleSamWilson.Thesuggestionthatthemeatshipmentscamefrom"UncleSam"ledtotheideathatUncleSamsymbolizedtheFederalGovernmentandassociationstuck.In1961,CongresspassedaresolutionthatrecognizedSamuelWilsonastheinspirationforthesymbolUncleSam.
ButSamWilsonlookednothingliketheUncleSampicturedabove.UncleSam'straditionalappearance,withawhitegoateeandstar-spangledsuit,isaninventionofartistsandpoliticalcartoonists.OneofthesepoliticalcartoonistswasnamedThomasNast.NastproducedmanyoftheearliestcartoonsofUncleSam.
ThemostfamouspictureofUncleSamappearedonanArmyrecruitingposter.TheposterwasdesignedinWorldWarI,andwasusedagaininWorldWarII.Thecaptionreads"IWantYouforU.S.Army."JamesMontgomeryFlaggdrewthispicture,andservedasthemodeltoo!
