Construction(建筑)oftheAmberRoombeganin1701.ItwasoriginallyputatCharlottenburgPalace,homeofFrederickⅠ,thefirstKingofPrussia.TheroomwasdesignedbyGermansculptor(雕刻家)AndreasSchlüter.PetertheGreatlovedtheroomonavisit,andin1716theKingofPrussia—thenFrederickWilliamⅠ—sentittoPetertheGreatasagift.
TheAmberRoomwasshippedtoRussiain18largeboxesandputinthewinterpalaceinStPetersburgasapartofaEuropeanartcollection.Itwasfirstopenin1746inthewinterpalace,whereitwashousedtill1755.In1755,CzarinaElizabethorderedtheroombemovedtotheCatherinePalaceinPushkin.ItaliandesignerBartolomeoFrancescoRastrelliredesignedtheroomtofitintoitsnew,largerspaceusingextraambershippedfromBerlin.
Itseemshardtobelievethatboxesofseveraltonsofambercouldgomissing,andmanyhistorianshavetriedtosolvethemystery.Themostbasictheoryisthattheboxesweredestroyedbythebombings(轰炸)of1944.OthersbelievetheamberisstillinKaliningrad,whilesomesay
itwasputontoashipandcanbefoundsomewhereatthebottomoftheBalticSea.OneofthemoreextremetheoriesisthatStalinactuallyhadasecondAmberRoomandtheGermansstoleafake(赝品).
ThehistoryofthenewAmberRoom,atleast,isknownforsure.Thereconstructionbeganin1979atTsarskoyeSeloandwascompleted25years—and$11million—later.ItisbasedlargelyonblackandwhitephotographsoftheoriginalAmberRoom.By2003thegreatworkoftheRussiancraftsmenhadbeenmostlycompleted.ArtistsusedclosetotentonsofamberofdifferentcoloursandtypestorecreatetheAmberRoom.Thenewroomwasdedicated(把……献给)byRussianPresidentVladimirPutinandGermanChancellorGerhardSchroderonthe300thbirthdayofthecityofStPetersburg.
