TheOpenUniversityinBritain
I.
NowadaystheOpenUniversityinBritainplaysanimportantroleinBritisheducation.In1963theleaderoftheLabourPartymadeaspeechexplainingaplanfora'universityoftheairaneducationalinstitutionwhichwouldmakeuseoftelevision,radioandcorrespondencecoursestogiveeducationalopportunitytothosepeoplewho,foronereasonoranother,didnothaveachancetoreceivefurthereducation.Butatthattimemanypeoplelaughedattheplan.
By1969theplanwaswelladvancedandbyAugust1970theOpenUniversity,asitisnowcalled,hadreceivedfortythousandapplications.Butonlytwenty-fourthousandcouldbeacceptedthenforthefourintroductorycourses:
socialsciences,arts,scienceandmathematics.Manyclerks,farmworkers,housewives,teachers,policemenattendedthefirstclassovertheradiooronTVinJanuary1971.Meanwhilestudycentersweresetupalloverthecountrysothatstudentscouldspendoneweekayearatoneoftheuniversity'ssummerschools.
Itisprobablythecheapestandmostfar-reachingmethodtopromoteeducation.
