[Abstract]RomeoandJulietandTheButterflyLoveraretwowell―knownliterarycreationsinthewesternandChinesehistories.Bothareclassifiedasgreatlovetragediesinthattheirheroesandheroinesallfirststruggleddesperatelyintheconflictbetweenloveandfeudalism,andatlastcoincidentallygaveuptheiryouthfullivesforlove.However,owingtoculturaldiscrepancybetweenwesterncountriesandChina,acomparativestudyofthesetwoworksdeservesevengreaterappreciation.Thispaperdwellsontheirdissimilaritiesfromthreeaspects:
themepresentation,characterizationandplayconstruction.Itischerishedthatsuchacomparativeresearchwillfurtherenhancereaders’appreciationaswellastheliterarystatusofthesetwotreasuresintheworldofliterature.

【摘要】《罗密欧与朱丽叶》和《梁祝》是中西文学史上的两大文学巨著,都是感人至深的爱情悲剧,剧中的主人公为了真爱同样挣扎在封建势力与理想爱情的矛盾冲突中,最后又不约而同地为了爱情而舍弃年轻的生命。
然而,由于中西方文化的差异,从而使得人们对于这两部作品的对比研究产生了更为浓厚的兴趣。
本文将从主题展现,人物刻画以及戏剧结构这三个方面来讨论它们之间的不同之处,也希望能通过该对比研究,使得读者对于这文学宝库中的两大财富有进一步的了解。

1.Introduction
RomeoandJulietandTheButterflyLoverarebothimportantandfamouslovestoriesinthehistoryofliterature.Bothofthestoriestookplaceinthebackgroundoffeudalism,whichservedastheimmediatereasonofthetragedies.Theirleadingrolesallfirststruggleddesperatelyintheconflictbetweenloveandfeudalism,andcoincidentallydiedforloveatlast.ButbecauseoftheculturaldiscrepancybetweenwesterncountriesandChina,thesamelovetragediesfounddistinctpresentationsinthesetwoworks.Itisthepurposeofthispapertomakeacomparativeresearchofthem,emphasizingtheirdissimilaritiesfromthreeaspects:
themepresentation,characterization,andplayconstruction.Onlythroughdetailedanalysisofbothsamenessanddifferencescanreadersobtainfurtherappreciationofthesetwotreasures.
2.ThemePresentation
RomeoandJulietwasaproductoftheEnglishRenaissancewhileTheButterflyLoverembodiedthelifeinthefeudalChina.However,thesetwoworkssharedthesametheme,thatis,theconflictbetweenloveandfeudalism.Althoughthemaincharacterswerefaithfultolove,thereexistedsimplytoomanyobstaclesontheirwaystotrueloveandmarriage.Inordertoprotecttheirlove,theystoodagainsttheirrespectivefeudalfamilies[1][P4].Theyfailedanddiedforloveintheend.Theywereliketwosisterplays.Butuponfurtherinvestigation,thesamethemewasgivencharacteristicpresentationsineachwork.
2.1TheconflictinRomeoandJuliet
RomeoandJuliet’sfamiliesweredeadlyenemies.Buttheyfellindeeplovewitheachotherattheirfirstsightattheball.Andpassionlentthempower.Theyexchangedtheirfaithfulvowofloveunderthemoonlight.Suchloveaffairsbetweenthefamiliesinfeudcertainlyledtogreatconflict.Inordertoprotecttheirlove,RomeoandJuliettookallkindsofactionstorevoltagainstthefeudalism.
WiththehelpofPriestLaurence,theygotmarriedveryquicklywithouttellingtheirparents.Atthesametime,theoldLordCapulethadbeenplanningforhisdaughterJuliet’sfuture.HehadchosenanoblemannamedParistobeherhusband.HesupposedthatJulietwouldfeelhonoredandgladtoaccepthimasahusband.ButinsteadofcheeringJuliet,thisnewsservedbuttoincreasehermisery.Sheperplexedhermotherbyherplaindistress.SherefusedtomarryParis.Andherexcusesmadeherparentsexasperated.Itseemedtoherfatherthatshewasputtingobstaclesinthewayofherowngoodfortune.SohesternlyorderedhertobereadybyThursday.Inherextremity,Julietdecidedtoseekhelpofthekindpriest.Shesaidtherewasnothingshewouldnotface,eventhedeathbyherownhands,ratherthangiveupRomeoandmarryParis.
InordertobetogetherwithRomeo,Juliettookthemedicinebravelyontheeveoftheweddingdayandlostconsciousness.Romeogotthenewsofher“death”andfeltanextremityofdespair.HethoughthewouldhavenojoywhenJulietwasdead.Sohekissedherandthendrankthepoison.WhenJulietcametoherself,shefoundherRomeowasdead,soshekilledherselfwithadagger.Thisclimaxoftheconflictresultedinthispairwinningtheirlove,butwiththesacrificeoftheirlives.
2.2TheconflictinTheButterflyLover
AstoTheButterflyLover,ideallovewasalsoimpossible.ForintraditionalChina,theyoungpeopleshouldobeytheirparentsastothemarriage,especiallyforayoungladyinarespectablefeudalfamily.
AlthoughZhuwasanoutstandingwomaninthefeudalChina,withhercouragetopursuefreelifeandideallove,shefacedanenvironmentarmedwithadeeply-rootedideologyofmale-chauvinism,whichbarredherfromrealizingherdreams[1][P101].
Therefore,goingtoschoolforlearning,whichisasimplethingtoday,wasquitedifficultevenprohibitiveforawomanatthattime.Shecouldonlysucceedinherwishbydisguisingherselfasayoungman.WhenZhuaskedforstudyinginschoollikeotherboys,hersister-in-lawcreateddifficultiesforherevenridiculedher,sayingZhuwouldloseherchastityduringtheperiod.ThenZhuhadtoputaflowerintoaflowervaseandswearthatifshebehavedimproperly,theflowerwoulddie,andifnot,itwouldkeepaliveuntilshecameback.Lateron,shewenttoschool.Buthersister�Cin-lawdidnotgiveup,sheputsomeboiledwaterintothevaseinthehopethattheflowerwoulddieatonce.Fortunately,herplotfailed,theflowergrewmoreandmorebeautiful.ThisepisodebeforethelaterlovetragedysignifiedinadvancethehugefeudalpressureonZhu[2][P34].Insuchanenvironment,Zhu’spursuitoflovewasnotlikeRomeoandJuliet’s.ZhufellinlovewithLiang,butbecauseofthefeudalismaswellasherfamilystatus,Zhucouldnotshowherloveopenly.ComparedwithRomeoandJuliet,shewasbroughtuptobereserved.Therefore,herlovetoLiangcouldonlybedevelopedlittlebylittle,slowlyandsubconsciously.
ZhufellinlovewithLiang,withoutrevealinghertrueidentity.Sheinvitedhimtovisithishomeandmeethisyoungersister(Zhuherself).Throughoutallthistime,LiangwascompletelyoblivioustothefactthatZhuwasinfactayoungwomanwhofellhopelesslyinlovewithhim.Whenthetimecameforthemtoreturntotheirrespectivevillages,Zhutriedinvain,toletLiangknowthetruth.Liangfellinlovewithhisclassmate'sfemaleform;andpromisedtoreturntomarryher.WhenZhureturnedhome,herfatherhadalreadyarrangedadifferentsuitorforherandpreparedtomarryherofftoapowerfulnoble'sson.BythetimeLiangrushedtoherhometoseekherhandinmarriage,itwastoolate.Herfather'swillhadprevailedandshewasbetrothed.
ItwasnotlongbeforeLiangsuccumbedanddiedofabrokenheart.Theconflictbetweenidealloveandfeudalismdeprivedthemoftheirloveandevenlives.
2.3Thedifferencesbetweenthesetwoconflicts
Inthesetwoplays,theleadingroles’pursuitsofidealloveandmarriageexpressedthecharacters’naturalinstincts[3][P6].InRomeoandJuliet,theleadingroles’familiesweretherepresentativesofthefeudalpower.Theywouldfightonthestreetevenwhentheyjusthappenedtomeeteachother,letalonepermittingtheirposteritytoloveeachother.HerearethesentencesbyJuliet’sfather:

WecanfindthatwhenJulietrefusedtomarrythemanshedidnotlove,herparentsscoldedherseverelyandthreatenedhertoleavethefamily.Therefore,JulietcouldresistherfatherwithmuchlesscompunctionthanZhu.ThiswaswhyshewasluckierthanZhu.ForherfamilyandRomeo’sweredeadlyenemies,butintheirheartstheystillhadadream,whichwastoescapewiththehelpoftheCatholicfather,leavingtheirfamilies,givinguptheirfamilynamesandlivinghappilytogetherwitheachotherinanotherplaceforever[4][P49].Inordertorealizethisdream,theycoulddoanything.Andtheconflictwouldbeclearedawayiftheysucceed.
InTheButterflyLover,theenvironmenttheylivedinwassimilartoRomeoandJuliet’s.Whattheyfacedwasalsoaheavyfeudalsociety.ThedifferencewasthatZhucouldnotresistherfamilystronglyandcompletelylikeJuliet.AlthoughherfamilyforcedhertomarrytheotheryoungmanMaWencai,that’sbecausetheyloveZhu.ForintraditionalfeudalChina,inpeople’smind,includingZhu’sparents,marryingarichfamilywasgoodtoZhu,sotheyjustpersuadedZhutimeandtimeagainwithgoodintentions.MaybethiskindoflovewasnotsuitableforZhu,butshecouldnotrefuse.Therefore,ZhucouldnotresistthemlikeRomeoandJuliet.AndthiswaswhyZhuwasmoreunfortunatethanRomeoandJuliet.
3.Characterization
Peoplearenotisolated,especiallyfortheleadingrolesinaplay;livinginspecificenvironments,peopletendtoinheritpartoftheircharactertraitsfromtheirsurroundings[5][P49].Andtheircharactersdecidetheirwill.Thentheywilltakeallkindsofactionsunderthecontroloftheirwills.Thispartwillexaminehowthecharacterizationsineachworkcontributetothedifferencesinthemepresentationdiscussedabove.
