Inrecentyears,womenweremorelikelytohavehadtwochildrenthanthreeormorechildren–atrendthatwasmostmarkedinthemostrecentperiod(38%vs.25%in1996;38%vs.22%in2006).Thesedays,mostfamiliesinAustraliahavetwochildren.Butthenumberofwomenwhohadgivenbirthtoasinglechildincreasedprogressivelyfromonly8%in1981to13%in2006.
