JaneEyre,writtenbyCharlotteBronte,tellsastoryofagirl'sstruggleforfreedomandherpersistenceforlove.AretellanddescriptionofthisworkwhichprojectsthewomanhoodoftheVictorianEraisgiveninthisessaytomakethereaderofboththebookandtheessayaeasierunderstanding.Atthesametime,thisessayseestheworkadeceptionofthewomanhoodoftheVictorianEra.Throughthisessay,thehardexperiencesofJaneEyreandherstruggleforfreedomandrespectandlovecouldclearlybeseen;andthemaincharactersoftheworkaredescribedclearlytoo.Actually,agreatworkcanbeappreciateddifferentlybydifferentreaders.Andthisessayexpressmyviewofit.

CharlotteBronte'snovel,JaneEyreskillfullyrevealsmuchofthesanctimonyconcerningwomenduringtheVictorianEra.Jane,theprotagonist,hasthequalitiesofendurance,valor,andvitality,yetsheisrefusedself-contentmentbytheconfinedsocietyinwhichshelives.Thisworkisnotonlyalovestory,butthetaleofayoungorphanedgirlandherstruggleforaplacewheresheiswellaccepted,forloveandindependence.ThroughthevariousenvironmentsBronteprovides,Janeoscillatesbetweeneducationandcontainmentandalsobetweenfreedomandservitude.Thisessayisnotonlyaretellofthework,butalsoaconclusionoftheviewofthewomanhoodinVictorianErafromthewriterofthisessay.

2.1Jane'shardlife
2.1.1BeginningatGateshead
ThestorybeginsatGateshead,JanehasherfirstexperienceofcontainmentindealingwiththeReeds.JohnReedtreatsJanebadlylikeaslaveandsmothersherspace,andMrs.Reedenslavesherineveryway.Mrs.ReedtreatsJaneasastepchildinsteadofanieceandoftentimesdiscriminatesinfavorofherchildrenevenifJaneisright.Forexample,intheincidentwithJohnReed,JaneisreadingabookaboutbirdsandsecretlywantstobeabletoflyawayfromallofthebadthingsatGateshead.WhenJohncondemnsJaneforreading"his"books,Mrs.ReedsendsJanetotheRedRoomeventhoughJanedidnotsayanything.ThetorturousexperienceforJanebecomesatypeofcontainmentinwhichshemustobeyherauntandcousins,asaslavewouldobeyhismaster.ThenJanefeelsthatshemustresisteveryone,Bessie,MissAbbot,hercousins,andespeciallyheraunt.Sheisurgedbythesepeopleofthesamekindtoprayandrepentandislockedyetagaininaneerieroom.Janeencountersanothercharacter,Mr.Lloyd,whoattemptstodegradeherbymakingfunofherforcrying.Herphysicalcontainments,alongwithhermentalones,arecomingtoheroneafteranotherandtakeherneartocrazy.Janedealswithmanyemotionsshefeelsbysortingthemwithinherself.ButhermeetingwithMr.Brocklehurstbeginsherbreakfromservitudeandcontainmentintofreedomandeducation.Mr.BrocklehurstpreachestoJaneaboutsinandtheBiblebutJanerefusestosaywhathewantstohear.HerfirsttasteofrebellioncontinuesinherencounterwithMrs.Reed.Janesays,"Iamgladyouarenorelationofmine.IwillnevercallyouauntagainaslongasIlive.IwillnevercometoseeyouwhenIamgrownup;andifanyoneasksmehowIlikedyou,andhowyoutreatedme,Iwillsaytheverythoughtofyoumakesmesick,andthatyoutreatedmewithmiserablecruelty"(Bronte,2003:
P30).Janehasthecouragetostanduponceandforalltoheraunt.Shehasanunexplainablefeelinginside,"thestrangestsenseoffreedom,oftriumph...itseemedasifaninvisiblebondhadburst,"(Bronte,2003:
P30),andthisfeelingisthecauseofJane'sbreaksfromcontainmentlateroninthenovel.
2.1.2AtLowoodAcademy
JaneusesthelastbreakawayfromherrestraintsatGatesheadandmovesontoLowoodAcademy.Lowoodisan"institution"thatgreetsherwithindigentconditionsalthoughshehasescapedfromtheangerofheraunt.TheroutineofherlifeatLowoodinitselfisacontainingdeviceinJane'sstrugglewithherlessons,hemmingmuslinforMrs.Smith,andobservingMissScatcherd'shumiliationofJane'sfriendHelenBurns.HelentriestouseherinfluenceonJanebutJane,Helen'sfoilcharacter,stillrefusestosubmittoauthority.Mr.BrocklehurstforcesJaneatonepointtostandonastoolforahalfhourforbreakingherslateandhecallsheraliar.ThisincidentaddsanotherinstanceofmiserytoJane'sgrowinglistwhichshebeginsatGateshead.AtLowood,JanebeginstorebelinacalmerwaythanatGateshead.Shefindsretributionforthestoolpunishmentthroughanewrolemodel,MissTemple.MissTemplepubliclyannouncesthatJanewasfalselyaccusedofbeingaliar.Inanindirectway,JanechallengestherestraintsthatMr.Brocklehurstimposesuponher.ThecontinuationofJane'scontainmentandconfinementextendstotheepidemicoftyphusinfiltratingLowood."Mr.BrocklehurstandhisfamilynevercamenearLowood,"(Bronte,2003:
P69)andthisfactclearlyshowsMr.Brocklehurst'shypocrisyandinsensitivity.Hisattitudetowardtheorphanedgirlscreatesaconstraintwheretheyareforcedtolivetogetherinadeadlydisease,butheisspecialenoughtohavetheoptiontostayawayfromthethreat.HelenBurnsdiesfromconsumptionandJanehasanotherindirectrebellionwhenshemarksHelen'sgravewith"Resurgam."Janefindsherwaytoapartialfreedomwhenshebecomesateacherbutsheisstillrestrictedbythestrictsuperintendentandthegoverningboard.SheevaluatesherfeelingsofdiscontentandrestlessnessandrebelsbyplacinganadvertisementintheHeraldforagoverness'position.Herfreedomcomes,orthefreedominhermind,whenshereceivesareplyfromaMrs.FairfaxinThornfield.
2.1.3AtThornfiled
ThornfieldManorbecomesthenextstageinJane'sjourneytofreedomfromherrestraintsandbeginsinacomfortablemanner.Althoughitbeginswarmly,Thornfieldbecomesashelterofboredom,restlessness,anddiscontentforJane.Tofreeherselffromtheboredom,JanegoesouttomailaletterandunknowinglyencountersMr.Rochester.Janefindsthat"...thefrown,theroughnessofthetravelersetmeatmyease:

P105).Withherpastexperiences,JaneknowshowtodealaptlywithMr.Rochesteranddisplaysherskillsindoingsoinaconversationwithhimevenwhensheknowswhoheis."Idon'tthink,sir,youhavetherighttocommandme,merelybecauseyouareolderthanI,orbecauseyouhaveseenmoreoftheworldthanIhave;yourclaimtosuperioritydependsontheuseyouhavemadeofyourtimeandexperience"(Bronte,2003:
P125).InthecommentJanemakesdirectlytoMr.Rochester,sheisbrave.HeisheremployerbutsherefusestobedemeanedbyhimandherexperiencesatGatesheadandLowoodteachhertobefirmbutpolite,apartofhermovetowardeducationandawayfromcontainment.AnotherexampleofJane'srebellioncomesfromwithinher.SherealizesthatsheisfallinginlovewithMr.Rochesteranditisunacceptablebecausesheislowerthanhiminthesocialstatus.Thelovesheholdsisarebellioninitselfbecausesheisimpoverishedandlowerthanhim.JanecomparesherselftothebeautifulBlancheIngraminordertosortherfeelings.ShecontinuesherrebellionwhenMrs.Reedcallsforher.Mrs.Reedisilland,althoughshetreatsJanebadlyatGateshead,Janegoestoherside-inherrefusaltoletMrs.Reedovercomeher.Janeslowlylearnshowtodealwiththebadtimeslifehashandedherthusfar.Mrs.Reed,stilljustascoldonherdeathbedasshehasbeeninthepast,continuestodenounceJaneandhascontemptforher.Mrs.Reedproclaims,"Thefeverbrokeoutthere[Lowood],andmanyofthepupilsdied.She[Jane],however,didnotdie:
butIsaidshedid-Iwishshehaddied!

P219).EvenwithsuchharshcommentsgiventoJane,shehandlesthesituationwithmaturityandconfidence,andthesearetheveryqualitiesthatattributetoherquestforfreedomfromcontainment.AsherThornfieldexperiencemoveson,shediscoversthatMr.Rochesteralreadypossessesawifeandshedecidestorunaway,movingsolelyonherfeelingsoflove.ThenshebeginshernextstageatMoorHouse.
