Theboundlesspossibilityoftryingoutandtheinstantknowledgeoftheoutcomethatstimulatesoneforfurtheranalysisofarationaleinquestion,iswhatIfindmostappealingaboutComputerScience.Keepingupaninquisitiveandexplorativeattitude,Ibelieve,leadstoaconstantlearningprocess.Thisapproachaddstothealreadyimmensepotentialforinnovationthatexistsinthisfield.
AsastudentinthefinalyearofundergraduatestudyforaBachelorofEngineeringdegreeinComputerScience&Engineering,Ilooktograduatestudytorefinemyknowledgeandskillsinmyareasofinterest.Ibelieveitwillalsoservetogivedirectiontomygoalofacareerasaresearchprofessionalatanacademicorcommercial,research-orientedorganisation.IintendtopursueanMSdegreeinordertoreachthatgoal.
AcademicBackground&ResearchInterests
Inmyundergraduatestudies,IhavebenefitedfromthebreadthofShivajiUniversity’ssyllabicontentthathasgivenmeacomprehensiveexposuretothecoreareasofComputerScienceandastrongconceptualunderstandingofthesame.Inthesethreeandhalfyearsofstudy,Ihavestrivedtomaintainanapproachofexpendingindependenteffortinallmyendeavors.Learningbymyselfandsharingmyknowledgewithothershasbeenmostworthwhile,whencomprehendingaconcept.
Overthepasttwoyears,IhavedevelopedaninterestintheareasofCompilerConstructionandInformationRetrieval.TheCompilerConstructionlabsessionslastsemesterrequiredthedesignofacompilerforC++programsthatwererestrictedtoForloops,Switchcasestatementsandsimpleinputandoutput.Theworkinvolvedinthis,aswellasthecourses,FormalSystemsandAutomataandCompilerConstruction,haveleadmetoappreciatetheintricaciesinvolvedinthisfield.However,formyMSdegree,Iremainopentoothertopicsaswell.
FormyB.Eproject,Ihavedecidedtoconcentrateonmyotherareaofinterestviz.InformationRetrieval.I’mattemptingtoevolveatechniquethat,whenemployedinasearchengine,willmaximizethecomprehensivenessandprecisionofthequerylistings.Theongoingworkhasintroducedmetoavastbodyofpertinentresearch,suchastheUniversityofWashington’sDynamicReferenceSiftingtechniqueforlocatinganindividual’shomepage,amongothers.Thishasservedtosharpenmyinclinationtoengageinactiveresearchwithinthisarea.

Oneperson’slifeinfluencesthelivesofanunbelievablenumberofpeople,oneofthemostimportantlessonsIlearned,beingtheHeadoftheApexBodyatseniorsecondarylevel(11thand12thstandard).Hencetheneedofresponsibleactions.BecomingtheyoungestHeadoftheApexBodyeverandtheonlyonetohaveservedforaperiodoftwoyearseventuallyturnedouttobeaconfidencebooster.Ittaughtmethatthebasisforgoodworkisself-relianceandveryimportantly,timemanagement.Notallofmyentiretwoyearsweredevoidofshortcomings.Ilearnedtoacceptbothcriticismandpraisewithapositiveframeofmind.Myworkinvolvedorganisingvariousevents,thatbroughtwiththemtheopportunitytoworkandinteractwithvariouskindsofpeople.Thiswasadistinctivelygratifyingexperienceforme,whichIfeelwouldstandingoodsteadinthefuture,especiallyinlieuofanyteachingexperience.
Inconclusion,IwouldliketoaddthattheessenceofUniversityeducationliesinthesynergeticrelationshipbetweenthestudentandhisdepartment.IfeelthatgraduatestudyatyourUniversitywillbethemostlogicalextensionofmyacademicpursuitsandamajorsteptowardsachievingmyobjectives.IwouldbegratefultoyouifI’maccordedtheopportunitytopursuemygraduatestudieswithfinancialassistanceatyourinstitutionandamabletojustifyyourfaithinme.

InthisessayIoutlinemyacademicandextra-curricularaccomplishments.AlsodiscussedaremycareerobjectivesandthemotivationtopursuethegraduateprograminCivilEngineeringattheUniversityofMassachusetts,Amherst.
TheundergraduatecurriculuminChemicalEngineeringatIIT,Kharagpur,introducedmetoawidegamutofsubjects,bothinandoutsidethefield.VariouscourseslikeMassTransfer,HeatTransfer,FluidMechanicsandTransportPhenomenahaveprovidedmewithastrongfootinginthetheoreticalconceptsofChemicalEngineering.
ItwasthefieldofEnvironmentalTechnologywhichparticularlycapturedmyinterest.ThedesiretodelvedeeperintothissubjectpersuadedmetotakeelectivecoursesinIndustrial(Air)PollutionControl,Non-conventionalEnergyEngineeringandEnvironmentalEarthSciences.Whileofferingbothdepthandbreadthacrossthisfield,thesecoursesputintoperspectivetheimportanceandrelevanceofChemicalEngineeringandtheapplicationofitsfundamentalstoenvironmentrelatedproblems.IcametorealizethatalthoughtraditionallyEnvironmentalStudieshasbeenunderthedomainofCivilEngineering,theincreasingcomplexityandmagnitudeofEnvironmentalproblemshaveresultedinagrowingneedfortheservicesofdisciplinesotherthanCivilEngineering.
DuringtheeightweekSummerTrainingattheDevelopmentConsultantsLtd.,IwasassignedtotheCementCell,whereIreceivedadetailedknowledgeofthecementmanufacturingprocesses.AsanIndustrialIntern,IwasassignedaprojectonCementPlantDesign(1800TPD),whichencompassedRaw-MixDesignandCapacityCalculationsforvariousequipment.Here,IgotaquaintedwiththePollutionandEnergyConservationproblemsfacedbytheCementIndustryanddevotedasignificantportionofmyprojecttothepollutionabatementmethods.
MyfinalyeardissertationwasontheManufactureofPhosphoricacidfromrockphosphateusingSulfuricacid(Designof100tpdPlant).ThiscoveredthedesignofReactor,Extractor(foracidpurification)andEvaporator(foracidconcentration).AsanaturaloutcomeofmyinterestinPollutioncontrol,adequateemphasiswasprovidedtowastegasesandwastewatertreatmentwhichinvolvedoff-gasscrubbing(venturidesign)anddischargemethoddetails,gypsumdisposalmethods,disposaloffluosilicicacidaswastematerialandtheincorporationofalltheseinthePlantLayout/flow-sheet.
AtIIT,Kharagpur,IhavereceivedthebestpossibleundergraduateeducationinChemicalEngineeringinIndia.Throughout,myscholasticrecordsandachievementshavebeenoutstanding.Ihaveconsistentlyrankedinthetop2%ofthestudentsofmyclass,inschool,andconsiderthehighpointofmyachievementsasbeingrankedinthetop1%ofmorethanonelakhstudentswhowrotetheJointEntranceExaminationforadmissiontooneofthesixIndianInstitutesofTechnology.
Throughoutmyschoolandundergraduateeducation,Ihavebeenakeenparticipantinextra-curricularactivities.GettingelectedastheSchoolPupilLeader(HeadGirl)helpedmehonemyorganizationalandinterpersonalskills.AtIIT,IhavebeeninvolvedintheAnnualculturalFestasHeadoftheControlTentTeam.IhavealsotakenactivepartindramaticsandmademycontributiontotheTechnologyDramaticsSociety(Englishchapter)atIIT,asitsmemberandlaterastheGovernor.IwasalsothememberoftheNSSatIITwhereIhadtheopportunitytobeinvolvedinit'sLiteracyandHealth&NutritionPrograms.IcontinuetobeamemberoftheHelpageSocietyofIndia,whichprovidespalliativecaretotheterminallyillcancerpatients.
Theyearsofundergraduateeducationhavebeenanenrichingexperience-bothacademicallyandotherwise,andIamdeterminedtomaintainthehighlevelsofexcellencethroughoutmycareer.
MyimmediatedegreeobjectiveisanM.Sinenvironmentalengineering–arapidlyevolvingfieldwithanimmensepotentialforresearch.IwishtofollowitupwithaPh.D,topursueacareerinresearchandexperiencetheexcitementandsatisfactionofbeingattheforefrontofthisvastexpandingfield.
Anextremelydistinguishedfaculty,amilieurepletewithacademicactivity,andagraduateprogramwhichblendshighqualitycourseworkandresearchfacilitiesatthecuttingedgeofeverysub-fieldarethefactorswhichhavemotivatedmetochoosetheUniversityofMassachusetts,Amherstforgraduatestudies.Ibelievetheprogramofferedwillhelpmeacquiretheversatilityneededtoreachmyfullpotentialasanengineer.
Itwould,therefore,beaprivilegetobeabletosecureadmissiontopursuegraduatestudies,withadequatefinancialassistanceattheUniversityofMassachusetts,Amherst.IamconfidentthatIwillmatchthehighstandardssetbyyouruniversity.

WhenintroducedtoeconomicsinhighschoolIrealizedthatitinterestinglyqualifiedasasubjectofbothArtsandScience.Itwasanareadefinedbypreciserules,principlesandaxiomsandyettherewastremendousscopeforself-expressionintheformofinterpretationandanalysis.ThisfacetofeconomicsintriguedmeverymuchandIdecidedtopursuefurtherstudiesinEconomics.
DuringmyMaster'sprogramIequippedmyselfasbestasIcould,withvarioustoolsusedineconomicanalysis.Iobtainedrigoroustraininginmathematics,econometricsandgametheory.AftercompletingtheMaster'sprog
