Whenhewas12yearsold,hegothisfirstjob.HebecameanewsboyonatrainthatranbetweenPortHuronandDetroit.Hesetupalaboratoryinabaggagecarofthetrainsothathecouldcontinuehisexperimentsinhissparetime.Unfortunately,hisfirstworkexperiencedidnotendwell.Hewasfiredwhenheaccidentallysetfiretothefloorofthebaggagecar.
ThomasEdisonthenworkedforfiveyearsasatelegraphoperator,buthecontinuedtospendmuchofhistimeonthejobconductingexperiments.Hegothisfirstpatent(专利)in1868foravoterecorderrunbyelectricity.However,thevoterecorderwasnotasuccess.In1870,hesoldanotherinvention,astock-ticker,for$40,000.Thestock-tickerisamachinethatautomaticallyprintsstockpricesonatape.

Theprojectstartedwell,butwhenitwasonlyafewmonthsunderwayatragicaccidentonthesitetookthelifeofJohnRoebling.Washingtonwasinjuredandleftwithacertainamountofbraindamage,whichresultedinhimnotbeingabletowalkortalkorevenmove.Inspiteofhishandicap,Washingtonwasneverdiscouragedandstillhadaburningdesiretocompletethebridgeandhismindwasstillassharpasever.
