”thepostasked.“IhavewatchedsomevideosaboutWarwickonYouTubeanditseemstomethatthepeoplearesnobbyandarrogantincontrasttothosefromNottingham.”MemberswerequicktodefendWarwick,butVshufremainedunconvinced.
Thethreadhighlightsthedifficultythatuniversitiesfaceintheageofsocialmedia.Atatimewhenreputationismoreimportantthaneverbecauseofhigherstudentfeesandgreaterglobalcompetition,theabilitytomanagetheirreputationsisincreasinglyfallingoutoftheirhands.
Howtoreachanincreasinglynetworkedgenerationthatismoreinclinedtotrusttheopinionoftheiranonymouspeersontheinternetthanofficialbodiessuchasuniversitieswasaproblemdiscussedatlastweek’sYouthStrategyMarketingConference2011.
HelenPennack,headofmarketingcommunicationsattheUniversityofLeicester,saysstudentsnowpostqueriesonFacebookortheStudentRoomaboutopendaysorwheretofindtheirtimetables,ratherthansimplycontacttheuniversitydirectly.“Whenwedorelationshipmarketingcommunications,wearetryingtostrikeupatwo-waydialoguewithstudentsandtheyaretakingtheconversationawayfromusandhavingitwithotherpeople,”shesays.“Howwemakeourselvespartofthatconversationagainisquiteachallenge.”
Heruniversityhasrespondedbysettingupasystemthatallowsstudentstosync(与……同步)communicationsfromLeicesterwiththeirFacebookaccount.Butshesaysuniversitiesalsoneedtobepresentinotherwebspacesusedbystudents,suchasTwitter.
Warwick,whichappointedadigitalandonlinecommunicationsmanagerlastyear,knowswellthebenefitsofhavingasocialmediapresence.“Ayearago,anapplicanttweeted,‘Oh,no.IheartheUniversityofWarwickisclosing,whatamIgoingtodo?
’”saysWarwick’sspokesman,PeterDunn.Whilethistweetcouldhavecausedhugeproblemsifspread,theuniversitywasabletotweetback,“We’restillhere,honest”.
Hesaysthecommunicationsteamcheckwhatisbeingsaidabouttheuniversityonsocialmediaonceortwiceaday,andrespondsifsomeoneisconfusedoraskingforinformation.Butitdependsontheforum.“IftheyareontheStudentRoomweassumetheywanttobitch(抱怨)aboutusbehindourbacks,”hesays.“IfitisonamuchmorepublicspacelikeTwitterorFacebook,someonelikeuscanseeitandrespond.”
Thechallengeforuniversitiesisnotonlytoknowwheretorespondbutwhen,andgettingthetoneright.“Wearealwayscarefulaboutproactivelyintervening(主动干涉)intheconversationbecausethatwouldbeseenasrude,”saysPennack.“Whatismuchmoreeffectiveisifoneofourstudentswadesinthereandputssomebodystraight.”
Someuniversitieshavealreadyrespondedtothis,shesays,byhavingagroupofstudents“primedtosomeextenttojointheconversationandcorrectpeoplewhereitisappropriatetodoso”.ItisnotsomethingLeicesterhastriedyet,but,shesays,“wemayconsiderit”.
WhileImperialCollegedoesnotprimestudents,itdoesrecruitateamofofficialstudentbloggerstowriteregularlyabouttheirexperiencesattheuniversity.Theyarenotpaidormoderated,andarefreetoblogaboutwhatevertheylike.Butthereareoccasionalprizesforthemostfrequentbloggers.PamelaAgar,headofdigitalmediaatImperial,saysthecollegecouldpotentiallyaskthemtoblogonaparticularsubject,buthadnotdonesoyet.
“Theycananddosaynegativethingsaboutus,”shesays.“Whentheydo,it’susefulfeedback.”Itcanalsomaketheblogsmoreauthentic,shesays—somethingthatisparticularlyimportanttothesocialmediageneration.
ChrisFonseka,athird-yearinformationsystemsstudentatImperial,saysheappliedforastudentbloggerrolebecausehewasattractedbytheideaofhavingavoicearoundcampus.Heblogsabouthisgeneralactivitiesattheuniversity.Healsoreceivesregularemailsfromstudentsandprospective(未来的)studentsanxioustoputqueriesaboutaccommodationorfinancestoarealstudent.
Hesayshehasneverfeltrestrictedinwhathewrites.“IfIhonestlyfeltnegativeaboutImperial,Iwouldwriteaboutit,”hesays.
TomRidgewellwentastepfurther.WhilestudyingmediaattheUniversityofLincoln,hedecidedtocreateatelevisionadvertisementfortheuniversityandputituponYouTube.“Ilabelledthevideosas‘banned’simplybecauseit’sfunniertoimaginethatIactuallyshowedthemtoaboardofdirectorsandgotthrownoutoftheroom.Also,videosgenerallydoalittlebetterwithanexaggeratedtitle.”
IanRichards,pressofficeratLincoln,saystheuniversityonlybecameawareoftheadvertisementsoncetheywereanonlinehitandGooglealertsshowedpeoplewerebloggingaboutthem.“Wedidn’tknowwhattomakeofthem,butwhenstudentsweretalkingaboutthemonopendayswefeltitwassomethingtotallyleftfield,butabitofablessingforus.”Ridgewellhassincebeencommissionedtocarryoutworkforthemarketingdepartment.
