Introduction
ThepasttwodecadeshavewitnessedasteadyimprovementofEnglishLanguageTeachinginjuniorhighschoolEnglishteaching.However,EnglishLanguageTeachingisstillfarfrombeingsatisfactory,andunabletomeettheneedsofthepoliticalandeconomicdevelopmentofthecountry.SomestudentswhohavelearnedEnglishforthreeyearscouldnotevensayasimplecorrectsentenceorperformthebasiccommunicativefunctions.TraditionalmethodsbeingwidelyusedinEnglishteachingemphasizethelanguagerules,andonrotememorizationofgrammaticalrulesandvocabulary,andtheyalsoneglectthecommunicativecompetence.EveninoralEnglishteachingclass,teachersalsoignoregivingthechancefor

studentstopracticetheirspokenEnglishorusethewrongapproachtoteach.Therefore,itisachallengeforEnglishteacherstofindeffectivewaystotrainandcultivateproficientlanguagepersonally.Unfortunately,alltheapproachesthathaveeverbeenadoptedinEnglishLanguageTeachingarenotaseffectiveasexpected,notonlyintheorybutalsoinpractice.
Differentfromthetraditionalteacher-centeredinstruction,cooperativelearningisateachingstrategyinvolvingstudents’participationinsmallgrouplearningactivitiesthatpromotepositiveinteraction.Studentsareencouragedtosolveproblems,answerquestionsoftheirown,discuss,explain,debateorbrainstormintheirteamsduringclass.Teammemberslearntocooperateandworktogethertowardacommongoal.ThereissomecertainpracticalsignificanceontheconceptofCLbeingusedinoralEnglishtraining.CLcanchangetheeducationalmodelinwhichtheteacheristhemostimportantpartoftheteachingandlearningintotheoneinwhichthestudentistakenasthemainbodyandtheteacherleadstheclassroom.Italsopromotesthetransformationofteachingmethods,fromtheoneofinstillationtothestudent’sindependentstudy.Sofar,inthisfield,therearefewerpracticesinimplementingCLinoralEnglishteaching.Therefore,inthepaper,IwilltrytostudymoreinthisfieldtobuildthefoundationformylateroralEnglishteaching.
Thispaperiswrittenforthreemainpurposes:
(1)toreflectpresentsituationofEnglishteaching,
(2)tointroducetheapproach--CL,and(3)topresenttheprocedureofimplementingCLinoralEnglishteachingandthesuggestionsontheresultsofinvestigations.Inthispaper,CLanditsapplicationofCLinoralEnglishteachinginjuniorhighschoolwillbeintroduced.
1.Theconceptofcooperativelearning(CL)
&itstheoreticalbasis
1.1ThebasicconnotationofCL
Fromthebeginningof80’stothelastcentury,Americanscholars,JohnDewey,Slavin,R.E.,Johnson&Johnson,carriedonaseriesofresearchesonCLandgainedaremarkableachievement.Ourcountry’sscholars,WangTan,HuangHuairong,ZhaoJianhua,hadintroducedtheCLtheoriesintoChinasince90'sinlastcentury.TheydidagreatnumberofresearchesoftheoriesandpracticesandestablishedthetheoriesandstrategyofCLandteachingwhichwasadaptedtoChineseeducationalfeature.
AlthoughalotofscholarsgiveCooperativeLearningdifferentdefinitions,ItendtoagreewithWangTan’sdefinitionofit.HedefinedCLwithateachingstrategysystemwhichaimed
atpromotingstudents’mutualcooperationinthedifferentgroupsandreachingacommonstudytargetandgroupsarepraisedbythetotalresultofgroups.(WangTan,2001)TosynthesizeChineseandForeignscholars’cognitionofCL,WangTansummedupthebasicconnotationofCLasfollows:
(1)CLisakindofteachingactivitywhichtakegroupsasmainbody;
(2)CLisakindofmutuallycooperativeactivitybetweencompanions;(3)CLisakindoftargetactivity;(4)TheencouragementofCLbasesonthetotalresultofeachgroup;(5)CListhatteachersassignstudytaskandcontrolteachingprogress.
