DuringhisworkontheMississippihemettravelersofallkinds,andthishelpedhimagreatdealwhenhestartedtowrite.ButthenumberoftravelersbecamesmallerwhenwarstartedinAmericain1861.Manyofthegreatshipsontheriverstoppedwork.SamuelleftthenandwenttoNevadawithhisbrother,whowasatthattimeGovernorofNevada.There,nearthetownofCarson,Samuelbecameagoldminer,buthenevermademuchmoneyatthetime.Hesoonsawthatlifeinthegoldmineswasnotforhim.HealsotriedwritingforthenewspapersinNevada,andthisseemedmorehopeful.Hefoundthathecouldwrite.
HewenttoEuropein1867andvisitedFranceandItaly.In1870hemarriedOliviaLangdon,andtwoyearslaterhewasspendingnearlyallhistimewriting.Amonghisbooksishisownstory(1908).
HeisnowalwaysknownasMarkTwain,andmanypeopledonotevenknowthathisfamilynamewasClemens.HetraveledinAmericaandinEngland,andwenttoOxfordin1907.HewasoneofthegreatestAmericanwritersofthetime,andcouldmakehisreaderslaugh–athingwhichfewwriterscando.Hediedin1910.
