Fredrickson'sunconventionalideasareimportanttothinkaboutatthistimeofyear.WithValentine'sDayaroundthecorner,manyAmericansarefacingagrimreality:
Theyarelove-starved.Ratesoflonelinessareontheriseassocialsupportsaredisintegrating.In1985,whentheGeneralSocialSurveypolledAmericansonthenumberofconfidantstheyhaveintheirlives,themostcommonresponsewasthree.In2004,whenthesurveywasgivenagain,themostcommonresponsewaszero.
AccordingtotheUniversityofChicago'sJohnCacioppo,anexpertonloneliness,andhisco-authorWilliamPatrick,"atanygiventime,roughly20percentofindividuals—thatwouldbe60millionpeopleintheU.S.alone—feelsufficientlyisolatedforittobeamajorsourceofunhappinessintheirlives."ForolderAmericans,thatnumberiscloserto35percent.Atthesametime,ratesofdepressionhavebeenontherise.Inhis2011bookFlourish,thepsychologistMartinSeligmannotesthataccordingtosomeestimates,depressionis10timesmoreprevalentnowthanitwasfivedecadesago.Depressionaffectsabout10percentoftheAmericanpopulation,accordingtotheCentersforDiseaseControl.
AglobalpolltakenlastValentine'sDayshowedthatmostmarriedpeople—orthosewithasignificantother—listtheirromanticpartnerasthegreatestsourceofhappinessintheirlives.Accordingtothesamepoll,nearlyhalfofallsinglepeoplearelookingforaromanticpartner,sayingthatfindingaspecialpersontolovewouldcontributegreatlytotheirhappiness.
ButtoFredrickson,thesenumbersreveala"worldwidecollapseofimagination,"asshewritesinherbook."Thinkingoflovepurelyasromanceorcommitmentthatyousharewithonespecialperson—asitappearsmostonearthdo—surelylimitsthehealthandhappinessyouderive"fromlove.
"Myconceptionoflove,"shetellsme,"giveshopetopeoplewhoaresingleordivorcedorwidowedthisValentine'sDaytofindsmallerwaystoexperiencelove."
Youhavetophysicallybewiththepersontoexperiencethemicro-moment.Forexample,ifyouandyoursignificantotherarenotphysicallytogether—ifyouarereadingthisatworkaloneinyouroffice—thenyoutwoarenotinlove.Youmayfeelconnectedorbondedtoyourpartner—youmaylongtobeinhiscompany—butyourbodyiscompletelyloveless.
Tounderstandwhy,it'simportanttoseehowloveworksbiologically.Likeallemotions,lovehasabiochemicalandphysiologicalcomponent.Butunlikesomeoftheotherpositiveemotions,likejoyorhappiness,lovecannotbekindledindividually—itonlyexistsinthephysicalconnectionbetweentwopeople.Specifically,therearethreeplayersinthebiologicallovesystem—mirrorneurons,oxytocin,andvagaltone.Eachinvolvesconnectionandeachcontributestothosemicro-momentofpositivityresonancethatFredricksoncallslove.
Whenyouexperiencelove,yourbrainmirrorstheperson'syouareconnectingwithinaspecialway.PioneeringresearchbyPrincetonUniversity'sUriHassonshowswhathappensinsidethebrainsoftwopeoplewhoconnectinconversation.BecausebrainsarescannedinsideofnoisyfMRImachines,wherecarryingonaconversationisnearlyimpossible,Hasson'steamhadhissubjectsmimicanaturalconversationinaningeniousway.Theyrecordedayoungwomantellingalively,long,andcircuitousstoryaboutherhighschoolprom.Then,theyplayedtherecordingfortheparticipantsinthestudy,whowerelisteningtoitastheirbrainswerebeingscanned.Next,theresearchersaskedeachparticipanttorecreatethestorysothey,theresearchers,coulddeterminewhowaslisteningwellandwhowasnot.Goodlisteners,thelogicgoes,wouldprobablybetheoneswhoclickedinanaturalconversationwiththestory-teller.
Whattheyfoundwasremarkable.Insomecases,thebrainpatternsofthelistenermirroredthoseofthestorytellerafterashorttimegap.Thelistenerneededtimetoprocessthestoryafterall.Inothercases,thebrainactivitywasalmostperfectlysynchronized;therewasnotimelagatallbetweenthespeakerandthelistener.Butinsomerarecases,ifthelistenerwasparticularlytunedintothestory—ifhewashangingontoeverywordofthestoryandreallygotit—hisbrainactivityactuallyanticipatedthestory-teller'sinsomecorticalareas.
Themutualunderstandingandsharedemotions,especiallyinthatthirdcategoryoflistener,generatedamicro-momentoflove,which"isasingleact,performedbytwobrains,"asFredricksonwritesinherbook.
Oxytocin,theso-calledloveandcuddlehormone,facilitatesthesemomentsofsharedintimacyandispartofthemammalian"calm-and-connect"system(asopposedtothemorestressful"fight-or-flight"systemthatclosesusofftoothers).Thehormone,whichisreleasedinhugequantitiesduringsex,andinlesseramountsduringothermomentsofintimateconnection,worksbymakingpeoplefeelmoretrustingandopentoconnection.Thisisthehormoneofattachmentandbondingthatspikesduringmicro-momentsoflove.Researchershavefound,forinstance,thatwhenaparentactsaffectionatelywithhisorherinfant—throughmicro-momentsoflovelikemakingeyecontact,smiling,hugging,andplaying—oxytocinlevelsinboththeparentandthechildriseinsync.
