Michelle,Iloveyousomuch.Afewnightsago,everybodywasremindedjustwhataluckymanIam.(Applause.)MaliaandSasha,wearesoproudofyou.And,yes,youdohavetogotoschoolinthemorning.(Laughter.)
And,JoeBiden,thankyouforbeingtheverybestVicePresidentIcouldhaveeverhopedfor,andbeingastrongandloyalfriend.(Applause.)
MadamChairwoman,delegates,IacceptyournominationforPresidentoftheUnitedStates.(Applause.)
Now,thefirsttimeIaddressedthisconventionin2004,Iwasayoungerman,aSenatecandidatefromIllinois,whospokeabouthope--notblindoptimism,notwishfulthinking,buthopeinthefaceofdifficulty;hopeinthefaceofuncertainty;thatdoggedfaithinthefuturewhichhaspushedthisnationforward,evenwhentheoddsaregreat,evenwhentheroadislong.
Eightyearslater,thathopehasbeentestedbythecostofwar,byoneoftheworsteconomiccrisesinhistory,andbypoliticalgridlockthat’sleftuswonderingwhetherit’sstillevenpossibletotacklethechallengesofourtime.
Iknowcampaignscanseemsmall,evensillysometimes.Trivialthingsbecomebigdistractions.Seriousissuesbecomesoundbites.Thetruthgetsburiedunderanavalancheofmoneyandadvertising.Ifyou’resickofhearingmeapprovethismessage,believeme,soamI.(Laughterandapplause.)
Butwhenallissaidanddone--whenyoupickupthatballottovote--youwillfacetheclearestchoiceofanytimeinageneration.Overthenextfewyears,bigdecisionswillbemadeinWashingtononjobs,theeconomy,taxesanddeficits,energy,education,warandpeace--decisionsthatwillhaveahugeimpactonourlivesandonourchildren’slivesfordecadestocome.
Andoneveryissue,thechoiceyoufacewon’tjustbebetweentwocandidatesortwoparties.ItwillbeachoicebetweentwodifferentpathsforAmerica,achoicebetweentwofundamentallydifferentvisionsforthefuture.
Oursisafighttorestorethevaluesthatbuiltthelargestmiddleclassandthestrongesteconomytheworldhaseverknown--(applause)--thevaluesmygrandfatherdefendedasasoldierinPatton’sArmy,thevaluesthatdrovemygrandmothertoworkonabomberassemblylinewhilehewasgone.
Theyknewtheywerepartofsomethinglarger--anationthattriumphedoverfascismanddepression;anationwherethemostinnovativebusinessesturnedouttheworld’sbestproducts.Andeveryonesharedinthatprideandsuccess,fromthecornerofficetothefactoryfloor.
Mygrandparentsweregiventhechancetogotocollege,buytheirownhome,andfulfillthebasicbargainattheheartofAmerica’sstory--thepromisethathardworkwillpayoff,thatresponsibilitywillberewarded,thateveryonegetsafairshotandeveryonedoestheirfairshareandeveryoneplaysbythesamerulesfromMainStreettoWallStreettoWashington,D.C.(Applause.)
AndIranforPresidentbecauseIsawthatbasicbargainslippingaway.Ibeganmycareerhelpingpeopleintheshadowofashutteredsteelmillatatimewhentoomanygoodjobswerestartingtomoveoverseas.Andby2008,wehadseennearlyadecadeinwhichfamiliesstruggledwithcoststhatkeptrisingbutpaychecksthatdidn’the;folksrackingupmoreandmoredebtjusttomakethemortgageorpaytuition,putgasinthecarorfoodonthetable.AndwhenthehouseofcardscollapsedintheGreatRecession,millionsofinnocentAmericanslosttheirjobs,theirhomes,theirlifesavings--atragedyfromwhichwe’restillfightingtorecover.
Now,ourfriendsdowninTampaattheRepublicanConventionweremorethanhappytotalkabouteverythingtheythinkiswrongwithAmerica.Buttheydidn’thavemuchtosayabouthowthey’dmakeitright.(Applause.)Theywantyourvote,buttheydon’twantyoutoknowtheirplan.Andthat’sbecausealltheyhavetoofferisthesameprescriptionsthey’vehadforthelast30years--Haveasurplus?
Tryataxcut.Deficittoohigh?
Tryanother.Feelacoldcomingon?
Taketwotaxcuts,rollbacksomeregulationsandcallusinthemorning.(Applause.)
Now,I’vecuttaxesforthosewhoneedit--middle-classfamilies,smallbusinesses.ButIdon’tbelievethatanotherroundoftaxbreaksformillionaireswillbringgoodjobstoourshoresorpaydownourdeficit.Idon’tbelievethatfiringteachersorkickingstudentsofffinancialaidwillgrowtheeconomy,orhelpuscompetewiththescientistsandengineerscomingoutofChina.(Applause.)
Afterallwe’vebeenthrough,Idon’tbelievethatrollingbackregulationsonWallStreetwillhelpthesmallbusinesswomanexpandorthelaid-offconstructionworkerkeephishome.
Wehavebeenthere.We’vetriedthatandwe’renotgoingback.Wearemovingforward,America.(Applause.)
Now,Iwon’tpretendthepathI’mofferingisquickoreasy.Ineverhave.Youdidn’telectmetotellyouwhatyouwantedtohear.Youelectedmetotellyouthetruth.(Applause.)
Andthetruthisitwilltakemorethanafewyearsforustosolvechallengesthathavebuiltupoverdecades.Itwillrequirecommoneffortandsharedresponsibility,andthekindofbold,persistentexperimentationthatFranklinRooseveltpursuedduringtheonlycrisisworsethanthisone.(Applause.)And,bytheway,thoseofuswhocarryonhisparty’slegacyshouldrememberthatnoteveryproblemcanberemediedwithanothergovernmentprogramordictatefromWashington.
Butknowthis,America--ourproblemscanbesolved.(Applause.)Ourchallengescanbemet.Thepathweoffermaybeharder,butitleadstoabetterplace.AndI’maskingyoutochoosethatfuture.(Applause.)
I’maskingyoutorallyaroundasetofgoalsforyourcountry--goalsinmanufacturing,energy,education,nationalsecurity,andthedeficit--real,achievableplansthatwillleadtonewjobs,moreopportunityandrebuildthiseconomyonastrongerfoundation.That’swhatwecandointhenextfouryears--andthatiswhyI’mrunningforasecondtermasPresidentoftheUnitedStates.(Applause.)

I’vemetworkersinDetroitandToledo--(applause)--whofearedthey’dneverbuildanotherAmericancar.Andtoday,theycan’tbuildthemfastenough,becausewereinventedadyingautoindustrythat’sbackonthetopoftheworld.(Applause.)
I’veworkedwithbusinessleaderswhoarebringingjobsbacktoAmerica--notbecauseourworkersmakelesspay,butbecausewemakebetterproducts.Becauseweworkharderandsmarterthananyoneelse.(Applause.)
I’vesignedtradeagreementsthatarehelpingourcompaniessellmoregoodstomillionsofnewcustomers--goodsthatarestampedwiththreeproudwords:

Andafteradecadeofdecline,thiscountrycreatedoverhalfamillionmanufacturingjobsinthelasttwoandahalfyears.
Andnowyouhaveachoice:
Wecangivemoretaxbreakstocorporationsthatshipjobsoverseas,orwecanstartrewardingcompaniesthatopennewplantsandtrainnewworkersandcreatenewjobshere,intheUnitedStatesofAmerica.(Applause.)Wecanhelpbigfactoriesandsmallbusinessesdoubletheirexports,andifwechoosethispath,wecancreateamillionnewmanufacturingjobsinthenextfouryears.Youcanmakethathappen.Youcanchoosethatfuture.
Youcanchoosethepathwherewecontrolmoreofourownenergy.After30yearsofinaction,weraisedfuelstandardssothatbythemiddleofthenextdecade,carsandtruckswillgotwiceasfaronagallonofgas.(Applause.)Wehavedoubledouruseofrenewableenergy,andthousandsofAmericanshavejobstodaybuildingwindturbinesandlong-lastingbatteries.Inthelastyearalone,wecutoilimportsby1millionbarrelsaday--morethananyadministrationinrecenthistory.Andtoday,theUnitedStatesofAmericaislessdependentonforeignoilthanatanytimeinthelasttwodecades.(Applause.)
Sonowyouhaveachoice--betweenastrategythatreversesthisprogress,oronethatbuildsonit.We’veopenedmillionsofnewacresforoilandgasexplorationinthelastthreeyears,andwe’llopenmore.Butunlikemyopponent,Iwillnotletoilcompanieswritethiscountry’senergyplan,orendangerourcoastlines,orcollectanother$4billionincorporatewelfarefromourtaxpayers.We’reofferingabetterpath.(Applause.)
We’reofferingabetterpath,wherewe--afuturewherewekeepinvestinginwindandsolarandcleancoal;wherefarmersandscientistsharnessnewbiofuelstopowerourcarsandtrucks;whereconstructionworkersbuildhomesandfactoriesthatwastelessenergy;wherewedevelopahundred-yearsupplyofnaturalgasthat’srightbeneathourfeet.Ifyouchoosethispath,wecancutouroilimportsinhalfby2020andsupportmorethan600,000newjobsinnaturalgasalone.(Applause.)
And,yes,myplanwillcontinuetoreducethecarbonpollutionthatisheatingourplanet--becauseclimatechangeisnotahoax.Moredroughtsandfloodsand
