Well,PrimeMinisterKanandIjusthadanexcellentconversationandbilateral1meeting(双边会议)afterthreedayswherewe’vehadanopportunitytoshareideasonnotonlythemostpressingissuesthatarefacingoureconomiesbutalsoarangeofsecurityissues.
IcongratulatedPrimeMinisterKanonhisleadership,andwebothnoted2thesignificanceof50yearsofaU.S.-Japanalliancethathasbeenacornerstone(基础,柱石)notonlyofourtwonations’securitybutalsopeaceandprosperitythroughoutAsia.
Wediscussedsomeverypressingsecurityissues,inparticularNorthKorea,thesinkingoftheCheonan,andtheimportanceofbothourcountriesstanding3insolidarity4(团结)withSouthKoreaandtheentireinternationalcommunitystandingwithSouthKoreaincondemning5theincidentandmakingsurethatNorthKoreagetsaclearsignalthatsuchprovocations6(挑衅,激怒)areunacceptable.
Ialsoexpressedappreciation7toJapanforitssupportfortheIransanctionsthatwepassedthroughtheUnitedNationsSecurityCouncil,andwediscussedissuesofimplementation8.
But,ofcourse,inadditiontosignificantdangers,wealsotalkedaboutgreatopportunities. Weseethepossibilitiesofstrengtheningoureconomictiesacrossawholerangeofissues. That’sbeen,obviously,thesubjectofthissummit.
We’rebothdetermined9topursueopportunitiesincleanenergyandjobgrowthandpromotingthekindofsustainablerecoverythatwillcreateopportunitiesforourpeopleandincreaseopportunitiesnotjustforthisgenerationbutforfuturegenerations.
AndI’mverymuchlookingforwardtovisitingJapanandenjoyingthehospitalityofPrimeMinisterKanashehelpstoshapetheagendaforthenextAPECmeeting. AndIthankedhimfortheverygenerousofferofboomandskimmers(撇油器)comingfromJapanthatcanhelpinwhatisgoingtobeaverylengthy10processofcleaninguptheGulf11inthewakeoftheoilspill.
Butit’sanexampleofafriendshipandanallianceinwhichJapanandtheUnitedStateshaveconsistentlybeenthereforeachother. Andalthoughthatfriendshipandalliancehastocontinuallyberenewedandreshapedinlightofnewcircumstances,thecorevaluesandthesharedvisionattheheartofourallianceremains12strong,andIamveryconfidentthatworkingwithPrimeMinisterKan,wearegoingtobeabletocontinuetobuildonthattremendoushistoryoverthelast50years.

AndIsharedmyrecognitionthatPresidentObamawaselectedonsuchabackgroundofthedemocracyintheUnitedStates.
AndIsaidtothePresidentIhaveanexperienceofpoliticallifebasedonsuchgrassrootsactivities,andIwillalsocontinuetopursuesuchastyleofpoliticswithmyallies.
AndIamalsohappytohavesuchameetinginayearwhichisamilestone15of50years--50thanniversaryoftheJapan-U.S.alliance. AndthisalliancebetweenJapanandtheUnitedStatesnotonlyhasbroughtpeaceandprosperitynotonlytoJapan,butalsoithasbeenafoundationandcornerstoneofcivilityofthewholeAsia-Pacificregion. AndPresidentObamahassucharecognitionandhecompletelysharesthesameunderstandingaboutouralliance. AndforthestabilityofAsia,JapanisproudofhavingbeenworkingtogetherwiththeUnitedStates.
AndItoldthePresidentthatitisveryimportanttofurtherenhancethepartnership16andouralliance,andatthesametime,inordertopursuethatgoal,itisimportantfortheJapanesepublicthemselvestothinkreallyaboutthesignificanceofouralliance,andforthemtothinkaboutthedecisionsforthefutureofouralliance.
AndItalkedaboutmyrecognitionwithPresidentObamatoday. Andinotherwords--inotherwords,itisoftenthecasethatpeopleseetheway--peopleseethesituationaspoliticiansmaketheirdecisionsandthepublicmakescomplaintsaboutit,thatitisimportantforustoavoidsuchasituationbycreatingrealdiscussionsaboutourfutureways.
