Stephenreceivedhis“deathsentence”in1964,whenIthoughtitwashardforhimtogoonwithhisstudy.StephenwentfromSt.AlbansSchooltoOxfordUniversity.Hewassaidtobea“lazy”undergraduate,buthisbrillianceearnedhimafirstclassdegree,an“entryticket”toaresearchcareeratCambridgeUniversityandauniquelyinspiringachievement.
Withinafewyearsoftheburstofhisdiseasehewaswheelchairbound,andhisspeechwassounclearthatitcouldonlybeunderstoodbythosewhoknewhimwell.Buthisscientificcareerwentfromstrengthtostrength:
hequicklycameupwithaseriesofinsightsintothenatureofblackholes(thenaverynewidea)andhowtheuniversebegan.In1974hewaselectedtotheRoyalSocietyattheexceptionallyearlyageof32.
Thegreatadvancesinsciencegenerallyinvolvediscoveringalinkbetweenphenomenathatwerepreviouslyconceptuallyunconnected—forinstance,IsaacNewtonrealizedthattheforcemakinganapplefalltoearthwasthesameastheforcethatholdsthemoonandplanetsintheirorbits.Stephen'srevolutionaryideaaboutalinkbetweengravityandquantum(量子)theoryhasstillnotbeentested.However,ithasbeenhugelyinfluential;indeed,oneofthemainachievementsofstringtheory(弦理论)hasbeentoconfirmandbuildonhisidea.HehasundoubtedlydonemorethananyoneelsesinceEinsteinimprovedourknowledgeofgravityandheisoneofthetoptenlivingtheoreticalphysicists.
