剑桥大学工业设计培养方案
FirstYear
ThefirstyeardesigncoursesincludeDrawing,wherethestudentslearntodevelopthe3-Dvisualisationandcommunicationskillsneededforengineeringdesign;ProductDesign,wheretheyreceiveanintroductiontoproductevolutionandthemethodsusedinthefirsttwophasesofthedesignprocess(ClarificationoftheTaskandConceptualDesign);andStructuralDesign,wheretheylearntoapplythefundamentalsbeingtaughtintheStructuralMechanicsandMaterialscoursestoadesignproject,workinginateamtoplan,design,manufactureandtesttodestructionasimplestructure.Inaddition,studentsareencouragedtoattendlecturesgivenbyindustrialspeakersonawiderangeofrelevantengineeringapplications.

∙Understandorthographicprojectionsofsolidobjects.

FeaturesoftheStructuralDesigncourseare:
(a)Undergraduatesworkinpairstodesign,buildandtesttodestructionalight-weighttrusswithaspanofabout1m.
(b)Eachstudentwillbeissuedwithalab.book.Allcalculations,roughsketchesetc.shouldberecordedinthislab.book.
(c)Eachpairwilldesigntheirstructureindetail,andmaketheirworkingdrawingsinpenciloncartridgepaper.Thedrawingswillbehandedin.Theywillbesetupintheworkshopreadyforthefabricationafternoons.Theymustbehandedinwiththecompletedstructure.
(d)Undergraduateswillmaketheirstructuresintheworkshopunderthesupervisionofaseniortechnician.Publishedworkshoptimesmustbeobserved.Nostudentswillbeallowedintheworkshopattimesotherthan2p.m.to5p.m.onthefiveprogrammeddays.
(e)Iftimetabledmechanicaldrawingperiodsclashwithtimetabledperiodsforstructuraldesign,thelattertakesprecedence,andundergraduatesshouldcatchupwithdrawingpracticeintheirowntime.
(f)Thecompletedstructurewillbecostedbytheundergraduates.
(g)Thestructureswillbetestedtodestruction.Thetestingwillbecarriedoutindescendingorderof'cost'.Eachgroupwillmakeanoralpresentationoftheirstructurebeforeitistested.
(h)Eachindividualstudentwillwriteareportinhisorherlab.book,startingattheotherendfromtheroughcalculationsandsketches.Thisreportshouldincludethefollowing:
∙Summary;
∙Statementoftheproblem;
∙Summaryofthedesignprocess,withsketchesofthevariousdesignsconsidered;
∙Acompletesetofhand-calculationsrelatingtothefinaldesign;(DONOTWORD-PROCESSCALCULATIONS!
).
∙Acompletedcostingsheet(returnedatthetestsession);
∙Listofdeviationsofthestructureasbuiltfromthatasdrawn;
∙Testresultsandobservations;
∙Suggestedmodificationstoimproveperformance;

Thereportshouldbeconciseandmustbehandedinbythestipulatedtime.
(i)Thetotalnumberofmarksavailableforthestructuraldesigncourseis42.Thesewillbedividedasfollows:

Barelyacceptableworkattracts28marks,satisfactorywork35marks,andexceptionalwork42marks.
Eachindividualwillbemarkedontheoverallcontributionindesign,drawingandfabricationthathasbeenmadetotheGroup'sstructure,aswellasonthequalityoftheindividualreport.Theconceptofthedesign,theaccuracyandrelevanceofthecalculations,andthetestperformanceofthestructurearealsoconsidered.
Afailuretomeettheloadingrequirementsinthetestmightthusresultinonlyaslightreductioninmarks.Marksmaybedeductedforfailingtomeetanyorallofthethreedeadlines.
Eachgroupwillbegivenatimetoattendfordiscussionoftheirdesign.Studentsfailingtoattendwillbeawardednomarks.
(j)Anumberofprizeswillbeawardedforthebestoverallindividualperformancesinthisexercise.
