It'sbeencalledthe"SlurpeeSummit"afterthefrozendrink.Butyesterday'smeetingbetweenPresidentObamaandcongressionalleaderswasachancetotalkabouthowtheymightworktogetherafteramidtermelectionseasonthatgotprettytense.Asaresultofthemidtermelections,RepublicanswilltakecontroloftheHouseofRepresentativesinJanuary;DemocratswillstillcontroltheSenate.Duringthemeeting,PresidentObamaandRepublicanleaderssaidthateventhoughtheyhopetoworktogether,theyhavesomeprettybigdifferencesaboutwhattheythinkisthebestwayforward.Onethingtheydoagreeon:
movingforwardwillinvolveeveryone.

Thatwasn'ttheonlythinghappeninginWashingtonyesterday.TheSenatepassedafoodsafetybillthatwouldgivemorepowertotheFoodandDrugAdministration.TheHousepassedasimilarbillmorethanayearago.Thegoalofthebillistohelpmakethecountry'sfoodsupplysafer.Thiscomesafterrecentrecallsonthingslikelettuce,peanutsandeggs.Insomeofthosesituations,therecallswerevoluntaryandhadtobedonebythecompaniesthatproducethefood.Withthisnewbill,theFDAcouldordertherecalldirectly.Somecriticsthinkthatthebillisunfairtosmallfarmers.Theyarguethatsincemostoftheserecallsarefrombigcompanies,thesmallerfarmersshouldn'thavetobeheldtothesamestandards.

unemploymentbenefits.Thisisthemoneythatpeoplegetfromthegovernmentwhenthey'velosttheirjobs.Andforalotoffolks,thelastcheckisinthemail.That'sbecausethedeadlinetofileforextendedunemploymentwasyesterday.About2millionAmericansareexpectedtostopgettingchecksinDecember.Congresscouldextendtheunemploymentbenefits,buttheyhaven'tdecidedwhetherornottheywanttodothatyet.Partofthereasonmightbethepricetag.Oneproposaltoextendunemploymentintonextyearwouldcostmorethan$56billion.
