Viscousflowoccursbymoleculesmovingthroughthevoidsthatexistbetweenthem.Asthepressureincreases,thevolumedecreasesandthevolumeofthesevoidsreduces,sonormallyincreasingpressureincreasestheviscosity.
Water'spressure-viscositybehavior[534]canbeexplainedbytheincreasedpressure(uptoabout150MPa)causingdeformation,soreducingthestrengthofthehydrogen-bondednetwork,whichisalsopartiallyresponsiblefortheviscosity.Thisreductionincohesivitymorethancompensatesforthereducedvoidvolume.ItisthusadirectconsequenceofthebalancebetweenhydrogenbondingeffectsandthevanderWaalsdispersionforces[558]inwater;hydrogenbondingprevailingatlowertemperaturesandpressures.Athigherpressures(anddensities),thebalancebetweenhydrogenbondingeffectsandthevanderWaalsdispersionforcesistippedinfavorofthedispersionforcesandtheremaininghydrogenbondsarestrongerduetothecloserproximityofthecontributingoxygenatoms[655].Viscosity,then,increaseswithpressure.Thedashedline(opposite)indicatestheviscosityminima.
Thevariationofviscositywithpressureandtemperaturehasbeenusedasevidencethattheviscosityisdeterminedmorebytheextentofhydrogenbondingratherthanhydrogenbondingstrength.
Self-diffusionisalsoaffectedbypressurewhere(atlowtemperatures)boththetranslationalandrotationalmotionofwateranomalouslyincreaseasthepressureincreases.
