3.2.2impactfailureweight—thatmissileweight,estimated
statistically,atwhich50%ofthespecimenswouldfailinthe

4.SignificanceandUse
4.1TestMethodsAandBareusedtoestablishtheweightof

specified.Dataobtainedbyonetestmethodcannotbecom-
pareddirectlywiththeothertestmethodnorwiththose
obtainedfromtestsemployingdifferentconditionsofmissile
velocity,impingingsurfacediameter,effectivespecimendiam-
eter,andthickness.Thevaluesobtainedbythesetestvariables
arehighlydependentonthemethodoffilmfabrication.
4.2TheresultsobtainedbyTestMethodsAandBare
greatlyinfluencedbythequalityoffilmundertest.The
confidencelimitsofdataobtainedbythisprocedurecan,
therefore,varysignificantly,dependingonthesamplequality,
uniformityoffilmgage,diemarks,contaminants,etc.(see
Section15).
4.3TestMethodsAandBhavebeenfoundusefulfor
specificationpurposes.Correlationbetweentestresultsand
fieldperformancecanusuallybeestablished.
4.4Theimpactresistanceofplasticfilm,whilepartly
dependentonthickness,hasnosimplecorrelationwithsample
thickness.Hence,impactvaluescannotbenormalizedovera
rangeofthicknesswithoutproducingmisleadingdataastothe
actualimpactresistanceofthematerial.Datafromthesetest
methodsarecomparableonlyforspecimensthatvarybyno
morethan625%fromthenominaloraveragethicknessofthe
