IrecentlyreturnedtomyhomecityandmyfirststopwasatamuseumontheRiverMersey.Blanketedinmist,Victorianarchitecture(建筑)rosefromthebanksoftheriver,respondedtothesoundsofsea-birds,andappearedunbelievablycharming.WhenIheadedtowardthecenter,IfoundmyselfsurroundedbybuildingsthatmirrorthebestpalacesofEurope.Itisnothardtoimaginewhy,onfirstseeingthecity,mostvisitorswouldbeoverpoweredbythebeautyofthenoblebuildings,whicharesolidsignsofLiverpool'shistory.
Asiftostressitsculturalrole,LiverpoolhasmoremuseumsandgalleriesthanmostcitiesinBritain.AtWalkerArtGallery,IwastoldthatithasthebestcollectionsofVictorianpaintingsintheworld,andisthehomeofmodernartinthenorthofEngland.However,cultureismorethangalleries.Liverpooloffersmanymusicevents.AsBritain'sNo.1musiccity,ithasthebiggestcitymusicfestivalinEurope,anditsmusiciansarefamousallovertheworld.Liverpoolisalsowell-knownforitsfootballandothersportsevents.Everyyear,theMerseyRiverFestivalattractsthousandsofvisitors,makingthecityaplaceofwonder.
Asyouwouldexpectfromsuchacity,therearerestaurantsservingfoodfromaroundtheworld.Whenmytripwasabouttocomplete,IchosetorestmylegsinLiverpool'sfamousPhilharmonicpub.Itisamonument(丰碑)toperfection,andaheritageattractionitself.

Afewyearsago,twoofmyneighborswerethetopnewsstory.Onehadlegallyforcedtheotherintocourt.Alegalsuitwasbeingfoughtoverproperty(财产)lines.Beforethisaction,thesetwofamilieshadbeenarguingformonths.Atissuewasanewfencebuilttoexceedaboundaryline.Eventhoughitwasprobablyonlyamatterofinches,thesetwohomesconstantlyatwarcouldnotreachafriendlysettlement.Iworriedabouttheoutcomeoftheirproblem,becausewehadjustbuiltasix-foothighwoodenfenceononesideofouryard.Itwashighenoughtolooklikeawall.Now,ifeithermywifeorIweresunbathing,wecouldnotbeeasilyseenbyoutside.IntheU.S.,personalprivacyisveryimportant.
Ontheothersideofourproperty,nearthefrontofthehouse,alongstretchofhedge(树篱)growthservedasanotherbordermarker.ThissecondneighborbecameangrywhenItrimmedthehedgesthatranalongourdriveway.Yearsagohehadplantedtheehedgesbush.Itwasdebatableaswhetherornotthehedgeshadgrownmostlyonhisside,versusoursideofthelegallineofownership.Hesaidhewouldonlytrim(修剪)thethickhedgeswhenhefelt"goodandready."Thismeantlateinthefallwheneveryoneelsewascuttingluckthickbranches,leavesandothergreenery.Iwouldhavetowait.Foralongtimewehadnotbeenspeakingtoeachother.Nofriendly"Goodmorning"waves,smiles,orheadnodsofacknowledgement.Wewerevisible"enemies".
Theproblemwasthattherapidlythickeningovergrowthofhedgeswasscratchingthepaintonournew,shiny,blackcar.WheneverIpackedmycarinthedrivewayalongsidemyhouse,thedamagetomyfreshlywashedandwaxedvehiclewasnoticeableandvexing.Duetobushovergrowth,itbecamedifficultforpassengerstoevenexitthecarfromtherightside.Ihadtiredofwaitingformyneighbortofulfillhispromises.Hewasnotthetypeofpersonofferingtopayforrefinishingmycar,whichhadbynowmanyscratchmarks(划痕),andwasrapidlylosingitsshineandlusteronthesidewherethehedgesgrew.Andthetruthofthematterwas,heneveractuallytrimmedthehedgesonourside,simplybecausehedidnothavetolookatthatangleofwildoutgrowtheveryday.
Asfarasthisneighborwasconcernedtherewasnoproblem.Tohim,whatharmcouldalittlebrushfromnature'sgreenerydotoaluxuryautomobilemadeofhardsteel.Healwaysmadeajokeaboutthematter.Fromthisgrowingdisputeitwasclearthatwewereheadedforbigtrouble.Perhapsweweregoingtoadvancefromourwarofsilence,toshoutingmatches,andperhapsevenaphysicalfight,andbothendupinjail.Therehadbeenstoriesofworsethingshappeningwhenneighborsquarreled.Whateverthecase,acourthearingwasunavoidable.
