SimoneRitter,atRadboudUniversityintheNetherlands,andSamFergusonattheUniversityofTechnologySydney,Australia,havebeenstudyingtheeffectofsilenceanddifferenttypesofmusiconhowwethink.

divergentthinking,whichreferstotheprocessofcreatingnewideas,andconvergentthinking,whichishowwefindthebestsolutiontoaproblem.RitterandFergusonfoundthatpeopleweremorecreativewhenlisteningtomusictheythoughtwaspositive,comingupwithmorespecialideasthanthepeoplewhoworkedinsilence.
“Wealsoperformedothertypesofmusicthatweresad,anxiousandcalm,anddidn’tseethiseffect,”saysFerguson.“Itseemsthatthetypeofmusicpresentisimportant,ratherthanjustanymusic.”Inaddition,notypeofmusichelpedconvergentthinking,suggestingthatit’sbettertosolveproblemsinsilence.
RitterandFergusonwritethattheirfindingcouldbeusedtoimprovecreativethinkinginplaceslikeeducationalinstitutionsorlaboratories,butIrmaattheUniversityofHelsinkiinFinland,sayshappymusicmayhelpcreativitybysettingoffthereleaseofdopamine,abrainchemicalinvolvedinpleasureandrelief.“Dopaminealsoincreasescreativethinkingandgoal-directedworking,”saysIrma.Andshealsothinkshappymusicmaynothelpconvergentthinkingbecausethiskindofthinkingreliesmoreonlogicandlessoncreativity.
