WilliamFranklin,Benjamin'ssonandroyalgovernorofNewJerseyin1771whenBenbeginswritingthework.BenbeginstheAutobiographyasalettertoWilliamwiththeintentoftellinghimabouthislife.
Parents,Ben'sparentswerenamedJosiahandAbiah.Abiahismentionedverylittle.Josiah'ssecondwife,shemotheredtenchildrenwithhim.Benwastheeighthofthesechildren.JosiahtookalargeinterestinBenjamin,teachinghowtodebateandhowtowriteeffectively.Benrespectedhimenormously.Afterbothparentsdied,BenhadthemburiedanderectedamonumenttotheminaprominentBostoncemetery.

SymbolismandIronyinTheCaskofAmontillado
Theuseofsymbolismisadistinctivefeatureinthisstory.Themostdistinctivesymbolinthiswriting,inmyopinion,isAmentillado.It’sthetitleofthestory,andthecauseofallthestoryfollowingit’sappearance.MontresorsetatrapwithAmontillado.HeusedittolureFortunato.AndtoFortunato,Amontilladowasalure.ButwhenMontresorsuccessfullytemptedFortunatowithAmontillado,thenitbecameasymbolofdeathtoFortunato.SoAmontilladointhisstoryisasymboloflureanddeathtoFortunato.
AnotherimportantsymbolisthebellswornonFortunato.PoegaveadetaileddescriptiononFortunato’sdressingwhenhefirstappeared:
