In1950'sAmerica,theequalityofmanenvisionedbytheDeclarationofIndependencewasfarfromareality.Peopleofcolor,blacks,Hispanics,Orientals,werediscriminatedagainstinmanyways,bothovertandcovert.The1950'swereaturbulenttimeinAmerica,whenracialbarriersbegantoedownduetoSupremeCourtdecisions,likeBrownv.BoardofEducation;andduetoanincreaseintheactivismofblacks,fightingforequalrights.
MartinLutherKing,Jr.,aBaptistminister,wasadrivingforceinthepushforracialequalityinthe1950'sandthe1960's.In1963,KingandhisstafffocusedonBirmingham,Alabama.Theymarchedandprotestednon-violently,raisingtheireoflocalofficialswhosiccedwatercannonandpolicedogsonthemarchers,whoseranksincludedteenagersandchildren.Thebadpublicityandbreak-downofbusinessforcedthewhiteleadersofBirminghamtoconcedetosomeanti-segregationdemands.
ThrustintothenationalspotlightinBirmingham,wherehewasarrestedandjailed,KingorganizedamassivemarchonWashington,DC,onAugust28,1963.OnthestepsoftheLincolnMemorial,heevokedthenameofLincolninhis"IHaveaDream"speech,whichiscreditedwithmobilizingsupportersofdesegregationandpromptedthe1964CivilRightsAct.Thenextyear,KingwasawardedtheNobelPeacePrize.
