Introduction
Whenyoufirstmeetaforeigner(Westerner),youshouldintroduceyourselforbeintroducedbythethirdpersonwhoknowsbothofyou.
Whiledoingself-introduction,donotusetitles(Mr.,Dr.,etc.)beforeyournamebutjustgiveyourfamilynameandgivenname.Whenyouareintroducingsomeoneelseyou’dbettergivehisfullnametogetherwithhisappropriatetitle(s).Besidesthis,therearesomeotherWesternsocialconventionsconcerningintroduction,thoughtheyarenotstrictlyobservednowadays:
amanisintroducedtoawoman,theyoungtotheold,andthejuniortothesenior.
Ineverydaylife,andtheacquaintancesorcolleaguesmeet,greetingsarealwaysexchanged.Differentcultures,however,havedifferentwaysofgreetings.Asfarasthewesterncultureisconcerned,situation,status,age,socialpositionandtherelationofbothpartiesdecidethewayonegreetstheotherformallyorinformally.Forinstance,oneuses“Goodmorning,Mr.Stockel”togreetapresidentofaschool,andjustsimple“Hello,Linda”or“Hi,Jim”tohiscolleagueorfriend.
BesurethatsuchChinesesetexpressionsofgreetingas“Haveyoueatenyet?
”and“Whereareyougoing?
”shouldbeavoidedinthesituationofgreetingaWesterner,fortheWesternerwillbemostlikelytointerpretthemliterallyastheformerimplyingthat“Ifyouhaven’t,I’dliketotreatyou.”andthelatterasanoffencewhichmakeshimthinkthatyouaretoonosy.
