ThevowelslabeledAE,AAE,O,andAUshouldfirstandforemostbere-labelledasE,OI,O,andOU,respectively.EandOsoundliketheirHindicounterparts,butOIisthesoundofOfollowedbyI（adiphthong,andoneabsentinEnglish）andOUisthesoundofOfollowedbyU（anotherdiphthong,muchlikeAmericanEnglish"coat"）.

When,duringthethirdlesson,youtranscribetheEnglishword"at"intowhatissupposedtobetheBengalialphabet,youwantthestudentstolookattheBengaliandsoundtheword"at"becauseyou'vetaughtthemthesoundisAAEasin"hat."But,infact,anativeBengalispeakerlookingatexampleHshallread"oit"not"at."AndexampleJisthusalsoflawed,becausewhatinHindiistheAWsoundisinBengalianOUsound（likeAmericanEnglish"coat"）.SoexampleJdoesnotsoundlike"on"butliketheAmericanEnglishpronunciationof"own."

thereisreallynodifferenceinpronunciationbetweentheshortandlongvowels.WhatyoulabelIandEEarebothpronouncedthesame,inasoundsomewhatlikeEEin"meet"butshorter.WhatyoulabelUandOOarebothpronouncedthesame,somewhatlikeOOin"fool"butshorter.Dependingonthespeakerandthedialect,thesesoundscanbealittlelessextreme,beingsomewherebetweenUandOOorsomewherebetweenIandEE.Butmypointis:

thedistinctionbetweenshortandlonghasbeenlostinBengali,andspeakersmakenodistinctionunlesstheyconsciouslytrytoforcethespellingbackontothepronunciation,whichyieldsanartificialsound.
