Sincethe1960s,RenaissancefairshavegrowninpopularityintheUSandCanada.Communitiesinatleast44statesandtwoCanadianprovincesnowholdannualRenaissancefairs.Over200fairsareheldeveryyear,with40inCaliforniaalone.ThefirstRenaissancefairwasstartedinthe1960sbyaschoolteacherinsouthernCalifornianamedPhyllisPatterson.Shewantedtogiveherstudentsareal-lifehistoryexperience,soshecreatedthe"RenaissanceFaire"inherbackyard.Therest,astheysay,ishistory.
