Itwascoldafterthesunset.Whensomethingtookoneofhisremainingbaits,hecutthelinewithhisknife.Oncethemarlinleanedsuddenly,pullingSantiagoforwardonhisfaceandcuttinghischeek.Bydawnhislefthandwascramped(抽筋的).Thefishhadheadednorthward;therewasnolandinsight.Hungry,hecutpiecesfromthetunaandchewedthemslowly.
Thatmorningthefishjumped.Seeingit,Santiagoknewhehadhookedthebiggestmarlinhehadeverseen.Thenthefishwentdownandturnedtowardtheeast.Santiagodrankalittlewaterfromthebottleduringthehotafternoon.
Closetonightfalladolphintookthesmallhookhehadrebaited.Helifteditaboard,careful.Afterhehadrested,hecutmeatfromthedolphinandkeptalsothetwoflyingfishhefoundinitsstomach.Thatnightheslept.Heawoketofeelthelinerunningthroughhisfingersasthefishjumped.Feedinglineslowly,hetriedtotirethemarlin.Afterthefishsloweditsrun,hewashedhiscuthandsinseawaterandateoneoftheflyingfish.Atsunrisethemarlinbegantocircle.Faint,heworkedtobringthebigfishnearerwitheachturn.Almostexhausted,hefinallydrewhisbigfishalongsideanddroveintheharpoon(鱼叉).Thefishwastwofeetlongerthantheboat.NofishlikeithadeverbeenseeninHavanaharbor.
