Ifyouhaven’tbeenlisteningtopopradiointhepastfewmonths,you’vemissedtheriseoftwoseeminglyopposingtrends.Inamediuminwhichmediocre(平庸的)singinghasneverbeenabartoentry,alotofpopvocalssuddenlysoundgreat.Betterthangreat:
note-andpitch-perfect,asifthere’sbeenanunspokentighteningofstandardsatrecordlabelsoranevolutionaryleapinthedevelopmentofvocalcords.Attheotherextremeareafewhip-hopsingerswhoalsohittheirnotesbutwithaprecisionsoexaggeratedthatonfirstlisten,theirsongssoundcomicallyartificial,likeachorusof50srobotssingingMotown.
Theforcebehindbothtrendsisaningeniousplug-incalledAuto-Tune,adownloadablestudiotrickthatcantakeavocalandinstantlynudgeitontothepropernoteormoveittothecorrectpitch.It’slikePhotoshopforthehumanvoice.Auto-Tunedoesn’tmakeitpossibleforjustanyonetosinglikeapro,butusedasitscreatorintended,itcantransformawavering(颤抖的)performanceintosomethingtechnicallyflawless.“Rightnow,ifyoulistentopop,everythingisinperfectpitch,perfecttimeandperfecttune,”saysproducerRickRubin.“That’showwidespreadAuto-Tuneis.”
Auto-Tune’sinventorisamannamedAndyHildebrand,whoworkedforyearsinterpretingseismic(i.e.relatingtoearthquakes)datafortheoilindustry.Usingamathematicalformulacalledautocorrelation,Hildebrandwouldsendsoundwavesintothegroundandrecordtheirreflections,providinganaccuratemapofpotentialdrillsites.It’satechniquethatsavesoilcompanieslotsofmoneyandallowedHildebrandtoretireat40.Hewasdebatingthenextchapterofhislifeatadinnerpartywhenaguestchallengedhimtoinventaboxthatwouldallowhertosingintune.Afterheworkedonautocorrelationforafewmonths,Auto-Tunewasborninlate1996.
Almostimmediately,studioengineersadopteditasatradesecrettofixflubbed(搞砸了的)notes,savingthemtheexpenseandtroubleofhavingtoredosessions.ThefirsttimecommonearsheardAuto-Tunewasontheimmenselyirritating1998Cherhit“Believe”.Inthefirstverse,whenChersings“Ican’tbreakthrough”asthoughshe’sstandingbehindanelectricfan,that’sAuto-Tune—butit’snotthewayHildebrandmeantittobeused.Theprogram’sretunespeed,whichadjuststhesinger’svoice,canbesetfromzeroto400.“Ifyousetitto10,thatmeansthattheoutputpitchwillgethalfwaytothetargetpitchin10milliseconds,”saysHildebrand.“Butifyouletthatparametergotozero,itfindsthenearestnoteandchangestheoutputpitchinstantaneously”—eliminatingthenaturaltransitionbetweennotesandmakingthesingersoundjumpyandautomated.“Ineverfiguredanyoneintheirrightmindwouldwanttodothat,”hesays.
LikeothertrendssetbyCher,thecreativeabuseofAuto-Tunequicklywentoutoffashion,althoughitcontinuedtobeanindispensablepartoftheengineer’stoolbox.Butin2003,T-Pain(FaheemNajm),alittle-knownrapperandsinger,accidentallystumbleontotheChereffectwhileAuto-Tuningsomeofhisvocals.“Itjustworkedformyvoice,”saysT-PaininhisnaturalTallahasseeaccent.“Andtherewasn’tanyoneelsedoingit.”
Sincehis2005firstalbum,T-PainhassentadozenmechanicallycheerysinglesintotheTop10.Hecontributedtofournominatedsongsatthisyear’sGrammysonFeb.8,andhisinfluenceisstillspreading.WhenKanyeWestwaslookingforaneffecttomatchsomeheartbrokenlyrics,heflewT-PaintoHawaiitoseehowmanywaystheycouldadjustAuto-Tune.Diddygaveapercentageofhisupcomingalbum’sprofitstoT-Paininexchangeforsomelessons.EvenPrinceisrumoredtobeexperimentingwithAuto-Tuneonhisnewrecord.“Iknow[Auto-Tune]betterthananyone,”saysT-Pain.“AndevenI’mjustfiguringoutallthewaysyoucanuseittochangethemoodofarecord.”
Rubin,who’sproducedartistsasdiverseastheDixieChicksandMetallica,worriesthatthesafetynetofAuto-Tuneismakingsingerslazy.“Sometimesasingerwilldolotsoftakeswhenthey’rerecordingasong,andyoureallycanheartheemotionaldifferencewhensomeonedoesagreatperformancevs.anaverageone,”saysRubin.“Ifyou’repitch-correcting,youmightnotbothertomaketheeffort.Youmightjustgetitdoneandputitthroughthemachinesoit’sallintune.”Rubinhastakentohavinganethicalconversationbeforeeachnewrecordingsession.“Iencourageartiststoembraceanaturalprocess,”hesays.
WiththeexceptionofMilliVanilli’s,poplistenershavealwaysbeenfairlyindulgentaboutperformers’ethics.Ithitsthatmatter,andtheaveragepersonlisteningtojustonepopsongontheradiowillhaveahardtimehearingAuto-Tune’simpact;it’seffectivelydeceptive.Butwhentrackaftertrackhasperfectpitch,thesongsarehardertodifferentiatefromoneanother—whichexplainswhypopisinaprettyseriouslull(停滞)atthemoment.Italsochangesthewaywehearunaffectedvoices.“Theotherday,someonewastalkingabouthowArethaFranklinattheInaugurationwasabitpitchy,”saysAnderson.“Isaid,‘Ofcourse!

Let’shopethatpop’sfetishforuniformperfectpitchwillfade,evenifthespreadofAuto-Tuneshowsnosignsofslowing.A$99versionforhomemusicianswasreleasedinNovember2007,andT-PainandAuto-Tune’sparentcompanyarefinishingworkonaniPhoneapp.“It’sgonnaberealcool,”saysT-Pain.“Basically,youcanaddAuto-TunetoyourvoiceandsendittoyourfriendsandputitontheWeb.You’llbeabletosoundjustlikeme.”Askedifthatmightrenderhimnolongerunique,T-Painlaughs:
