Inspiredbyviewingpeoplemutteringtothemselvesastheytrytofindthingslikepeanutbutterinasupermarket,theresearchersconductedtwoexperimentstoseeifthisactuallyworked.Inthefirst,participantswereshown20picturesofvariousobjectsandwereaskedtofindacertainone,withsomeseeingatextlabel(标签)tellingthemwhattheywerelookingfor.Theseparticipantswerethenaskedtosearchfortheobjectagainwhilesayingthewordtothemselves,withresultsshowingthatsayingitaloudhelpedpeoplefindtheobjectmorequickly.
Thesecondexperimentsawparticipantsperformingashoppingtask,wheretheywereshownphotographsofitems(物品)commonlyfoundonsupermarketshelves.Theywereaskedtofindallexamplesofaparticularitem,soiftheywereaskedforapplestheyhadtofindallthebagsofapples,asquicklyaspossible.Theresearchersfoundthattherewasalsoanadvantageinsayingthenameoftheproductaloudwhentheyweresearchingforsomethingfamiliar.
