Theteamtrainedtheyoungsterstoflyinalargewindtunnelwearingbackpacksandfacemasksfullofsensorsthatrecordedtheirheartrate,bloodoxygenlevels,temperature,andmetabolicrate-howmanycaloriestheyburnedperhour.Theresearcherssimulated(模拟)low-,medium-,andhigh-altitudeconditionsbyalteringtheconcentrationofoxygensuppliedtofacemaskswornbyeachgooseasitflewinthetunnel.
Birdsalreadyhaveabetterheartandlungsthanmammalsforsustainedphysicalactivity.Andresearchersknewthatbar-headedgeesehaveevenlarger,thinnerlungsthatletthembreathemoredeeplyandanevenbiggerhearttopumpmoreoxygentomusclesthanotherbirds.
Thewindtunnelexperimentsshowedthatwhentheconcentrationofoxygenwasatitslowest-likethe7%foundontopofMountEverestversus21%atsealevelthegeese'sheartrateandfrequencyofwingbeatsremainedthesameevenastheirmetabolicratedropped.Somehow,thebirdsmanagedtocooldowntheirbloodthemeasuredbloodtemperaturedropped-soitcouldtakeinmoreoxygen,theresearchersreporttodayinelife.Thiscoolinglikelyhelpscompensatefortheverythinair,theteamsays.
Althoughwelltrained,thebirdswereonlywillingtostayintheairafewminutes-orless-whenwearingtheirbackpacksandflyingat"high"altitudes.Soit'snotclearwhethertheseadaptationsalonearewhatmakeitpossibletoflythe8hoursittakestoclimboverMountEverest.ButthosefewminutesshowedthesegeesereallycouldflyoverthetopofMountEverest.
