ButscientistsatLamont-DohertyEarthObservatoryatColumbiaUniversityandotherinstitutionshavecomeupwithadifferentwaytostoreCO2thatmighteliminatethatproblem.Theirapproachinvolvesdissolvingthegaswithwaterandpumpingtheresultingmixture—sodawater,essentially—downintocertainkindsofrocks,wheretheCO2reactswiththerocktoformamineralcalledcalcite(方解石).Byturningthegasintostone,scientistscanlockitawaypermanently.Volcanicrockscalledbasalts(玄武岩)areexcellentforthisprocess,becausetheyarerichincalcium,magnesiumandiron,whichreactwithCO2.
