Multi-modalDiscourseAnalysisisacollectionofresearchpapersinthefieldof
multimodality.Thesepapersareconcernedwithdevelopingthetheoryand
practiceoftheanalysisofdiscourseandsiteswhichmakeuseofmultiple
semioticresources;forexample,language,visualimages,spaceandarchi-
tecture.Newsocialsemioticframeworksarepresentedfortheanalysisofa
rangeofdiscoursegenresinprintmedia,dynamicandstaticelectronic
mediaandthree-dimensionalobjectsinspace.Thetheoreticalapproach
informingtheseresearcheffortsisMichaelHalliday's1994systemic-
functionaltheoryoflanguagewhichisextendedtoothersemioticresources.
Theseframeworks,manyofwhichareinspiredbyMichaelO'Toole's1994
approachinTheLanguageofDisplayedArt,arealsousedtoinvestigatemean-
ingarisingfromtheintegrateduseofsemioticresources.
Theresearchpresentedhererepresentstheearlystagesinashiftoffocus
inlinguisticenquirywherelanguageuseisnolongertheorizedasanisolated
phenomenonsee,forexample,Baldry,2000;Kress,2003;Kressandvan
Leeuwen,1996,2001;ledema,2003;Ventolaetal.,forthcoming.The
analysisandinterpretationoflanguageuseiscontextualizedinconjunction
withothersemioticresourceswhicharesimultaneouslyusedforthecon-
structionofmeaning.Forexample,inadditiontolinguisticchoicesandtheir
typographicalinstantiationontheprintedpage,1multimodalanalysistakes
intoaccountthefunctionsandmeaningofthevisualimages,togetherwith
themeaningarisingfromtheintegrateduseofthetwosemioticresources.
Todate,themajorityofresearchendeavoursinlinguisticshavetendedto
concentratesolelyonlanguagewhileignoring,oratleastdownplaying,the
contributionsofothermeaning-makingresources.Thishasresultedin
ratheranimpoverishedviewoffunctionsandmeaningofdiscourse.
Languagestudiesarethusundergoingamajorshifttoaccountfullyfor
meaning-makingpracticesasevidencedbyrecentresearchinmultimodality
forexample,Baldry,2000;CallaghanandMcDonald,2002;ledema,2001;
Jewitt,2002;Martin,forthcoming;Kress,2000,2003;Kressetal.,2001:

invitedcontributionfromAnthonyBaldry,aforerunnerintheuseofinform-
ationtechnologyforthedevelopmentofmultimodaltheoryandpractice.
TheremainingsevenresearchpapershavebeencompletedbyKay
O'HalloranandherpostgraduatestudentsintheSemioticsResearchGroup
SRGintheDepartmentofEnglishLanguageandLiteratureatthe
NationalUniversityofSingapore.TheSRGhasbeenactivelyinvolvedin
researchinsystemic-functionalapproachestomultimodalityoverthe
period1999-2003.

inspace,PartIIwhichdealswithelectronicmediaandfilmandPartIII
whichcontainsinvestigationsintoprintmedia.Thetheoreticaladvances
presentedinthisvolumeareillustratedthroughtheanalysisofarangeof
multimodaldiscoursesandsites,someofwhichareSingaporean.These
contributionsrepresentacriticalyetsensitiveinterpretationofeveryday
discoursesinSingapore.Thus,likealldiscourse,theyaregroundedinlocal
knowledge,butduetotheuniversalityofthesemioticmodelbeingused,
