很久以前,爱苹果装饰花园作为观赏植物。

EarlySpanishexplorerswhofoundthisplantgrowingwildinSouthandCentralAmerica,carrieditbacktoEurope.TheseplantsappearedingardensinItalyasearlyas1554.TheymusthavebeenthekindthatbearsyellowfruitbecausetheItalianscalledtheplant“pomid’oro”,orappleofgold.By1750,theplantwasgrownasacuriousornamentalplantthroughoutEurope.Somepeoplewereevendaringenoughtoeatthefruit.
In1781inAmerica,ThomasJeffersonraisedandateloveapples,butfewfollowedhisexample.Thirtyyearslater,theloveappleswereusedasfoodinLouisiana,andby1835,afewpeopleinthenorthernstateswerewillingtoexperimentwiththemtoo.Butevenaslateas1900,therewerepeoplewhostillbelievedthatthese“applesofgold”werepoisonous.
Althoughpeopledidnoteatthefruitofthisplant,theylikedlookingatitintheirgardens.Laterwhentheylearneditwasbothgood-tastingandgoodforthem,theymovedtheloveappleplantfromtheflowergardentothevegetablegarden.Theylearnedtocallitbyanewname“tomato”.
Theappleofgoldhaslostitsplaceintheflowergarden.Buttodaythetomato,growninhundredsofvarieties,isoneofthethreemostpopularvegetablesintheUnitedStates.
