ThereIstood,lookingupatSydney’sHarbourBridge---oneofthemostfamousbridgesintheworld.LocatednearthemagnificentSydneyOperaHouse,the40-storeybridgetowersoverAustralia’slargestcity.Thebridgewascertainlybeautifultolookat.Butwhointheirrightmindwouldwanttoclimbit?
Me,ofcourse!
Climbingthebridgeisnotsuchacrazythingtodo,infact.Touristsstartedclimbingthebridgein1998.Nowit’soneofSydney’smostpopularattractions.
Topreparefortheclimb,ourgroupof12climbershadtotakeaspecialclass.First,westoredallourpersonalbelongingsandchangedintospecialbridgeclimbingclothes.Then,theclimborganizersshowedushowtousethesafetybeltsandclimbthesteepladders.
Wewereevengivenlittlepersonalradiostoreceiveinstructionsfromourguideduringtheclimb!
Ourexpectationsbegantobuildandourgroupbecameexcited.Onehourlater,wewerereadytogo!
Wefirstcrossedsomecatwalksbelowtheroadpartofthebridge.IwasgladIwasn’tafraidofheights.LookingdownthroughthecatwalkIcouldseetheground50meters(164feet)below!
Nextweclimbedtheladdersleadingup,up,uptothebridge’sarch.Carsspedbyontheroadbelow.Thewindblewmorefiercelythehigherweclimbed.Moreandmoreofthecityslowlycameintoview.Soonwewereapproachingtheverytopofthebridge!
Whatasceneitwasatthetop!
Clear,bird’seyeviewsofthecityextendedinalldirections.Lookingsouthwesawthecityskyline,thefamousOperaHouseandtheocean.Itwasjustlikelookingatapostcard,exceptthatwewerereallypartofthepicture!
Everyonefeltproudofhavingreachedthisspotinthecity.
Noonewasreadytoleavewhenitwastimetogodown.Thetwohourswehadspent
