Quindlenleftjournalismin1995tobecomeafull-timenovelist.In1999,shejoinedNewsweek,writingabi-weeklycolumnuntilannouncinghersemi-retirementintheMay18,2009issueofthemagazine.Quindlenisknownasacriticofwhatsheperceivestobethefast-pacedandincreasinglymaterialisticnatureofmodernAmericanlife.Muchofherpersonalwritingcentersonhermotherwhodiedattheageof40fromovariancancer,whenQuindlenwas19yearsold.
Shehaswrittenfivebest-sellingnovels,threeofwhichhavebeenmadeintomovies.OneTrueThingwasmadeintoafeaturefilmin1998forwhichMerylStreepreceivedanAcademyAwardnominationforBestActress.BlackandBlueandBlessingsweremadeintotelevisionmoviesin1999and2003respectively.[1]
BorninPhiladelphia,PennsylvaniatoanIrishfatherandanItalianmother,Quindlengraduatedin1970fromSouthBrunswickHighSchoolinSouthBrunswick,NewJersey.[2]
QuindlengraduatedfromBarnardCollegeinNewYorkCityin1974;shenowservesonitsBoardofTrustees.SheisalsoontheCounciloftheAuthorsGuildandtheBoardofSt.Luke'sSchoolinNewYork.QuindlenismarriedtoGeraldKrovatin,anattorney;theyhavethreechildren.SheliveswithherfamilyinNewYorkCity.[1]

INTRODUCTION
Quindlenfirstgainedpublicattentionasacolumnistforthe NewYorkTimes. Herdistinctivestyleblendsdomesticconcernsandpoliticsandisadeparturefromthetypicalmale-centeredcolumnsfoundontheop-edpage.Asanovelist,Quindlenhasusedherjournalist'seyefordetailtoexplorefamilyrelationshipsandthedetailsofeverydaylife.
BiographicalInformation
QuindlenwasborninPhiladelphiatoCatholicparentsonJuly8,1953.Quindlenstartedhercareerinjournalismasareporteratthe NewYorkPost whileshewasstillattendingBarnardCollege.ShecontinuedtoworktherefortwoyearsafterearningherB.A.in1974.In1977Quindlenbeganworkingforthe NewYorkTimes asageneralassignmentreporter.LatershecoveredCityHalluntil1981,whenshestartedwritingthe“AboutNewYork”column.From1983to1985sheservedasthedeputymetropolitaneditoruntilshedecidedtoleavethenewspapertofocusonraisingherchildrenandwritingfiction.Theexecutiveeditorpersuadedhertocontinuetowriteforthepaper,offeringherafreelancecolumnwhichevolvedintothepopularandwidelysyndicated“Lifeinthe30s”editorial.Thecolumnranfrom1986to1988,andin1990,Quindlenbeganwritingabi-weekly“PublicandPrivate”columnontheop-edpage.Shepublishedherfirstnovel ObjectLessons in1991,andin1992wonaPulitzerPrizeforcommentary.Quindlenleftthe NewYorkTimes in1994topursuewritingfictionfull-time,buteventuallyreturnedtojournalismin1999withacolumnfor Newsweek.

Quindlen’sessaysrangefromthepersonaltothepolitical. LivingOutLoud (1988)collectsher“Livinginthe30s”columnsfromthe NewYorkTimes. TheseessaysfocusonQuindlen’sfamilylifeanddomesticissues. Likethemajorityofheressays,Quindlen'snovelsfocusondomesticlifeandfamilyrelationships.Theheroineof ObjectLessons isMaggieScanlon,anadolescentgirlgrowingupinanIrish-ItalianCatholicfamilyinthe1960s.ThenovelchroniclestheelevatingtensionsbetweenMaggie'sparentsduringonesummerseason. OneTrueThing (1994)focusesonthestoryofEllenGulden,areporterforaglamorousmagazineinNewYorkCity.Whenhermother,Kate,isdiagnosedwithterminalcancer,Ellenreturnshometohelptakecareofher.Initiallyresentful,Ellenbondswithhermother,confrontsherphilanderingfather,andcomestotermswithherfeelingsaboutherfamilyandherownnature. BlackandBlue (1998)exploresthetopicofdomesticviolence.FranBenedetto,theprotagonistofthenovel,fleesfromherviolenthusbandwithherten-year-oldson.AfterassumingnewidentitiesandsettlinginFlorida,Franreflectsonthelifesheleftbehindandtriestocreateanew,happierexistence. Blessings(2002)issetwithinahouseholdofthesamenamewhereLydiaBlessing,anelderlywoman,haslivedsincebeingbanishedbyherfamily.Hernarrowandreclusivelifechangeswhenherhandymanfindsababyatthebackdoorand,together,theycareforthechild.
