Collectivistswanttheirin-groupstobemonolithicandhomogeneous—witheveryonethinking,feeling,andactinginthesameway;theythinkthatinsuchgroups,therewillbeharmony.Theyfeelmorecomfortablethanindividualistsinthepresenceoflike-mindedothers.Individualistsemphasizeharmonylessandoftenthinkthatanargumentclearstheair.

Whenfacedwithaproblem,Americansliketogettoitssource.Thismeansfacingthefacts,meetingtheproblemheedon,puttingthecardsonthetable,andgettinginformation“straightfromthehorse’smouth.”Consistentwiththesetendencies,itisalsodesirabletofacepeopledirectly—toconfrontthem.Confrontationisnotnecessarilyrancorous,butitdoesinvolvereportingone’sfeelingshonestly,expectingreciprocalhonesty,anddealingwiththepersoninvolvedintheproblem.
