AfterreturningtoEnglandin1929,hemadeasoloflighttoAustraliainabiplane.Twoyearslater,in1931,hepilotedthefirsteast-westflightovertheTasmanSeabetweenNewZealandandAustralia.Hethenplannedtoflyaroundtheworld,buttheplanewasseverelydamagedinanaccidentinJapan.
AfterWorldWarIIhefoundedabusinessinLondon.Takingupoceansailingin1953,hewonthefirstsolotransatlanticracein1960bysailingthe“GipsyMothIV”fromPlymouthtoNewYorkCityin40days.
