Well,isn’tthislovely--andverycivilized2. (Laughter.) Helloeveryone,andthankyousomuchforjoiningushereattheWhiteHouseaswegathertocelebrateMother’sDayandhonoralloftheextraordinarywomeninourlives.
TodayisalsoMilitarySpouses3Appreciation4Day,andwehavesomeofthespousesandmothersofmilitarymemberswhoareherewithus,solet’sgivethemaroundofapplause(掌声雷动).
(Applause.) Weareforevergratefulforyourserviceandinspiredbyyourstrength. Sowe--asalways,JillandIremainsupportive. Wewillcontinuetodoeverythingwecantosupportyourefforts. AndIknowJillishere. WhereisJill?

Mrs.Carter,youhavebeenjustawonderfulsupportandasourceofknowledgeformeduringmytimehere. Youhavebeensogenerous. Wetrytohavelunchtogetherwheneveryoucomeintothecity,andIjusthavetosaythatthetimethatwespendtogethermeansagreatdeal. SoIcannottellyouhowmuchIappreciateyoursupport.

I’malsopleasedthatTriciaNixonCoxishere,PresidentNixon’sdaughter. Pleasestand. (Applause.) AndSusanandAnneEisenhowerwhoarePresidentEisenhower’sgranddaughters,theyarehere,aswell. SusanandAnne,pleasestand. (Applause.)

Andofcoursethere’sthephotoofPresidentEisenhowermeetingwithCivilRightsleadersthat--in1958thatisintheOvalOffice.
SothereismuchhistoryinthisroomtodayandI’msopleasedtowelcomethesegenerationsofwomenbacktotheWhiteHouse. Itisjustanhonortohaveyouall.
Ifyoulookaroundtheroom,reallythat’ssortofthethemeheretoday. Wehavemanygenerationsherethisafternoon:
We’vegotteenagersandretirees(退休人员),we’vegotfamilymembersandfriends,we’vegotCabinetSecretaries,andstudents,andeverythingelseinbetween.
Andmanyofyoucamewithawomanwhomeansagreatdealtoyourlife. Yes--oh,really?
(Laughterandapplause.) Somothers,daughters,granddaughters,mentors8,mentees(受指导者),sisters,bestfriends,it’ssortofawonderfulcombinationofwomenwhoareimportanttous.
Thepeopleheretodayshowcasejusthowcrucialwomenareinguidingourfamilies,andinourneighborhoods,andinourcountry,aswell.
They’retheshoulderthatweleanonasindividuals,butcollectivelythesearetheshouldersthatformthefoundationofourcommunities. They’reourfriends,ourteachers,ourmentors,ourbosses.
Theyfindtimetodrivecommunityprojectsandcarpools. (Laughter.) Theyleadourbusinessesandourbirthdayparties. Ourlivesandourcommunitiesareblessedbyeverything,bigandsmall,thatmothersandmotherfiguresgiveuseverysingleday.
Andthat’sreallywhatMother’sdayisallabout:

Theanswerisreallythere’snowaytoquantifyjusthowimportantthesemothers,thesewomenareinourlives. Andthere’snowaythatIcouldeverfully12measureallthatmyownmommyhasdoneforme. Thisismymommy. (Applause.)
ThiswomanwhotriestotakeabsolutelynocreditforwhoIamforsomereason,sheismyrock. ShehaspulledmeupwhenI’vestumbled(踌躇,蹒跚). She’spulledmebackwhenI’verunoutofline,talkingalittletoomuch. She’llsnapmeup. ShereallydoespushmetobethebestwomanthatIcanbe,truly,asaprofessional,andasamother,andasafriend. Andshehasalways,always,alwaysbeenthereforme. Andasourfamilyhavegrown,she’smanagedtoexpandherloveforallofus.
AndraisingourgirlsintheWhiteHousewithmymom--oh,notgoingtodothis--(laughter)--isabeautifulexperience. AndtheopportunitytohavethreegenerationslivingintheWhiteHouse,it’sbeautiful. AndI’mprettysurethePresidentishappyaboutit,too. (Laughter.)
Inthisworldthereissomuchgoingon,weknowthatwe’reblessed,theObamas. Weare. EventhoughweliveintheWhiteHouse,weknowthatourday-to-dayfamilyinteraction(互动)isn’treallydifferentfromfamilieslivinginAtlantaorSiouxFallsorTucson,becauseeveryoneisbusy. Oursisjusttelevised. Everyoneisdoingthebestjobthattheycantoraisetheirkids. Everyoneislookingforsupport.
AndinhisMother’sDayproclamation(公布,宣告)in1979,PresidentCarterwrote:
“Inthistimewhenthefamilyissubjectedtomanynewpressures,thejobofnurturing13futuregenerationsisoftenbothmoredifficultandmoreimportantthanever.” Andit’sastruetodaythatproclamationasitwas31yearsago. Really,onepersoncannotdoitalone. Andforanyofuswhothinkwecanorshould,weshouldjustgetoverit.
Weallneedthesupportofsomeoneinourlives.
Forassingularlyasimportantasmymotherhasbeeninmylife,therearesomanyotherwomenwhohavealsoplayedsignificantrolesinmydevelopment.
ThenewperspectivesthatIlearnedfromteachersandco-workershasreallyhelpedtoshapeme,too. Soitdoesn’talwayshavetobeamotheroragrandmother. Weeachhavethosepeopleinourliveswhohavegivenusasenseofourselvesbygivingusapieceofthemselves.
Andthat’soneofthereasonswhywestartedtheWhiteHouseLeadershipandMentoring14Initiativehere,evenwithourbusyschedules. Andthewomenwhoworkherearebusy. Webelieveintheimportanceofgivingouryoungmenteesapieceofourselves.
Andwe’vegotsomeofourmenteesherewithustoday,andIwantyoualltostand. Iwantourmenteestostand. (Applause.) Youalllooksopretty!

Thesepromising15youngwomenhavebeenwithusforthepastfewmonths,andwe’vehadourshareoffunstuffthatwe’vedone. We’vegonetoeventstogether. Afewofthemhavegottentorideinmymotorcade(车队)withme. It’skindofcooleverynowandthen(不时地,常常),right?

Butthisprogramisn’tjustaboutdoingfunstufftogether. It’salsoaboutensuringthatthesewomenreallyseetheirpossibilities,right?
It’sabouthelping18themrealizethattheycanbeleadersoftomorrow,andthat'swhatweexpect,andshowingthemthattheycancreatetheirownopportunities. That'swhatwetalkabout,right?

WewantthemtoimaginethepossibilitythattheycouldonedaybeaCabinetSecretary,oranofficerinthemilitarywhomentorsayounggirlonceaweek. Wewantthemtoimaginebeingbusinessleaderswhobalancetheirkidsandtheirprofessionallives.
Andtherearesomanyofthesestoriesrighthereinthisroom. Now,theymayhavedifferentcharactersandsoundtracks,right,butwhetheryougrewuponBingCrosby,ArethaFranklinorBeyonce--(laughter)--eachstoryhereisimportant.
Wesharesomuchaswomen. Theadvicewe’vereceivedfromsomeonewhocared. Thefriendwhohelpedusclearhurdles19(跨栏,障碍)thatwethoughtweretoohigh. Thewayourmotherlookedatuswhenwemadeherproud–-andwhenwemadehernotsoproud. (Laughter.) Youallknowthelook,right?
