“Thecriticalpiecethatwasmissingwasbusiness-interruptioninsurance,”saidMs.Melchionda,whohadpropertyandliabilityinsurancebuthadnevergotaroundtoaddingapolicythatreplacesincomelostafteraccidents.
BusinessownershaveplentyofstorieslikeMs.Melchionda’s,ofpoliciesthatdidn’tcoverenoughdamageorcoveredthewrongrisk.Someofthesecomplaintscanbeattributedtotight-fistedinsurancecompaniesormisinformedagents,butthefaultoftenlieswithentrepreneurs(企业家)whoglossovertheirinsurancedecisions.
“Generallyspeaking,small-businessownersarenotcompletelyawareofthecoveragetheyhaveorthecoveragetheyneed,”saidStevenSpiro,anindependentinsuranceagent,explainingthatmanysmall-businessownersbuyinsurancesimplytocomplywiththerequirementsofanofficelease.
PickinganAgent
Buyinginsurancecanbeintimidating(使人胆怯的),andit’sdifficulttoknowwhoistryingtotakeadvantageofyouandwhoisgivinghonestadvice.That’swhyyoushouldstartbyaskingotherentrepreneursinyourindustrywhatkindsofinsurancetheycarryandwhotheyboughtitfrom.Therearethreetypesofvendorswhocanhelpyoupickinsurance:
independentagents,captiveagents(专属代理人),andriskconsultants.
Independentagents,alsoknownasbrokers,offerthegreatestchoicebecausetheytypicallyrepresentmanycarriers.Theyarepaidoncommissionbytheinsurancecompany,between10percentand20percentoftheannualpremiumdependingonthepolicy.Beware:
becausesomecarrierspayahighercommissionthanothers,brokersmaybetemptedtoplayfavorites.
Captiveagentsrepresentoneinsurancecompanythatpaysthemasalaryandcommandstheirloyalty.SomecompaniessuchasAllstateonlydealwiththeirownagents;thatmeansyoucanonlybuytheirpoliciesthroughoneoftheiragents.
Bothindependentandcaptiveagentsreceivebonusesattheendoftheyearbasedontheirratioofpoliciessoldtodamagespaid.Thatmeansit’sintheirinteresttosellyouasmuchinsuranceaspossibleandminimizeyourclaimsasmuchaspossible.
Understand,also,thatmostagentsfocussolelyoninsurance.“Sometimestherearesolutionstoyourproblemthatmightbebettertreatedwithoutinsurance,”saidArthurFlitner,asmall-businessexpertattheInsuranceInstituteofAmerica.Insomecases,forexample,itmakesmorefinancialsensetoself-insureagainstcertainpropertyrisksbysettinguparainy-dayfund,ortominimizelawsuitrisksbyenforcingstrictemploymentpolicies.
That’swhenariskconsultantcanhelp.Becausethey’recostly—you’llusuallypayafewthousanddollarsforabasicproject—itmakessensetohireariskexpertonlyifyouhaveanunusuallyriskyoperation,orrunabusinesswithmorethan,say,$25millioninrevenue(收入)ormorethan100employees.
Afteryou’vefoundsometrustworthyvendors,it’stimetoshopforbids.Gotoasmanybrokersandagentsasyoulike,butkeepinmindthatinsurancecompanieswon’tbidonthesameaccountthroughdifferentbrokers.
PickingaPolicy
Ifyou’regrossinglessthan$3million,youwillmostlikelyendupwithabusinessownerspolicy,knownasaB.O.P.,whichbundlesbusinesspoliciesandletsyouaddadditionalpiecesasnecessary.EverycarrierassemblesitsB.O.P.differently,somakesureyou’remakingaccuratecomparisonswhenshopping.
Ifyouaregrossingmorethan$3million,youwillprobablyhavetobuyyourpoliciesseparately.Therearefourpoliciesyoureallycan’tdobusinesswithoutifyouhavemorethanacoupleofemployees:
Workers’compensationisrequiredbystatelawandcoversworkers’medicalexpenses,disabilitypayanddeathbenefits.Ratesvarywidelybyindustryandoccupation.Whilethepremiumsforasecretarymightbe22centsper$100ofpayroll,therateforaroofermightexceed$20per$100ofpayroll.Makesureyourbusinessisclassifiedcorrectly,anddon’ttrytopassoffyourtoyfactory(manufacturingisconsideredhigh-risk)asadesignfirm(lowrisk).Onceemployeesstartfilingclaims,carrierswillconcludethatyouareariskier-than-usualdesignfirmandraiseyourpremiums.
Propertyinsurancecoversyourphysicalpremisesaswellasequipmentinyouroffice.Ratesvarywidely,dependingontheageofyourbuilding,howfaritisfromthefiredepartment,andwhetheritismadeofsteelorwood.
Bewareofcoinsuranceclauses,whichallowcarrierstopayonlyashareofdamagesiftheybelieveyouunderinsuredyourproperty.Instead,askyourbrokertoadd“agreedvalue”coverageinwhichyouandtheinsurancecompanyagreeonanappropriateinsurancelevel.Thiscanaddupto15percenttoyourpremiums,butitleaveslessroomfordisputelater.
Generalliabilityinsurancecoversinjuriesyourcompanycausestootherpeople’shealth,propertyorreputation.Ratesusuallytakeintoaccountfactorslikerevenue,sizeofyourofficesandnumberofcustomers.Mostbasicpackagescover$1millionforeachoccurrence;umbrellapoliciescanaddmorecoveragequitecheaply.
Ifit’savailable,makesureyoubuythemoreexpensive“occurrence”policy,whichcoversyouforaccidentsatthetimetheyoccurred—evenifyouhavesinceleftthebusinessandyourpolicyhaslapsed—asopposedtoa“claimsmade”policy,whichcoversyouonlyifyouareinsuredwhentheclaimismade.
Businessinterruptioninsurance—thekindMs.Melchiondashouldhavehad—paysnotjustthelostsalesandrentandpayrollcostswhileyourebuildyourbusinessafteranaccident;italsopaysforyoutorentatemporaryofficeorequipmentsoyoucangetbackonyourfeetfaster.
