WhenNASA’sshuttlesweregroundedin2003,theagencybeganrelyingonRussianvehiclestodeliversuppliestothestation.However,theRussiancargoshipProgresscannothaultheweightyitemstheshuttlecan.ThenextdeliverybyProgressisscheduledforSeptember.
Gerstenmaiersaidstationmanagerspreparedforascenarioinwhichtherewouldbenoshuttleflightsthisyear.Despitethat,hesaidthegroundingoffutureshuttlemissionsopensthestationtorisk.
"Wearestillsusceptibletosomelargefailureofsomecomponentthatcanonlybedeliveredbytheshuttlethatwedon’thavealikespareonstation,"hesaid.
AmongthetasksDiscovery’sastronautsperformedforthestationwasthereconfiguringofagyroscope,whichfailedinMarch.Fourgyroscopes,eachweighing660pounds,areintendedtosteerthestation,butonlytwohavebeenworkinginrecentmonths.
OnMonday,duringtheirsecondspacewalk,DiscoveryastronautsStephenRobinsonandSoichiNoguchi,plannedtoreplacetheotherfailedgyroscope,whichhasnotworkedsince2002.
ThepairplannedtogooverproceduresforinstallingthegyroscopeonSundaywithastronautAndrewThomas,whowassettodirectMonday’sreplacement.
