2.2TestParameters
Theparameterslistedbelowareintendedtodefinenon-productspecificbuttoncycling.AllparametersarefurtherdefinedinSection6.0.Forclarity,theseparameterswillalwaysbehighlightedinitalicfontinthisdocument.Thevalueofeachparametershouldbedefinedbasedonanalysisofabuttonclickloaduserstudyperformedwithaninstrumentedtestunitorarepresentativetestbuck.
2.2.1SuperCycle
Onefullcycleofthebuttoncyclingtestmaybebrokendownintoasuccessionofdifferentloadapplications,eachhavingadifferentLoadProfile.WelabelthiscombinedsetofLoadProfilesasthe“SuperCycle”.Forthisreason,wefirstdefineparametersthatcharacterizeoneSuperCycleofthebuttoncyclingtest.
CycleQty:
ThequantityofSuperCyclescarriedoutduringthetest.
LoadApplicationLocation:
PositionontheUUTwherethebuttonloadisapplied.
LoadApplicationDirection:
OrientationoftheappliedloadrelativetotheUUTbuttonsurface.Defaultorientationisperpendicular.
Probe:
ThedevicethatappliesloadtotheUUT.Importantvariablestoconsiderarediameterandmaterialhardness.
OperationalState:
TheoperationalmodeoftheUUTduringtesting.Forexample:
forcedactive,ready,standby,ornon-operational.
2.2.2LoadProfile
EachloadprofilecontainedwithinaSuperCycleisdefinedbythefollowingsetofparameters.OneSuperCyclemaybecomposedofanunlimitedquantityofdifferentLoadProfiles.Inthisdocument,thesubscript“x”designatesaparticularLoadProfile.

QuantityofrepeatingloadapplicationsofLoadProfilexcontainedwithintheSuperCycle.
PeakLoad(PLx ):
MaximumforceappliedduringbuttonLoadProfilex.
RelaxedLoad(RLx ):

ThisdocumentistobeusedbyAppleReliabilityEngineerswhenspecifyingandcommunicatingbuttoncyclingtestrequirements.Theintendedaudienceis:
AppleReliabilityEngineers,AppleReliabilityTechnicians,andstafffromthirdpartyvendorsthatarerequiredbyAppletocarryoutreliabilitytestingonAppleparts/products.

Thepurposeofbuttoncyclingtestingistoidentifypart/productvulnerabilitiestothestressesexperiencedduringbuttonoperation.

5.1ButtonCyclerCapability:

ThebuttoncyclermustbecapableofrepeatedlygeneratingthespecifiedLoadProfileusingaProbeattheLoadApplicationLocationontheUUTasdefinedwithintheRRDwithinthetolerancesspecifiedinSection0.ThebuttoncyclerequipmentshouldbecapableofapplyingavarietyofloadsthatfallwithintherangeofacceptableparametersthataredefinedinTable5.1.

5.3TestFixture
ThetestfixtureandmountingmethodologyshallholdtheUUTinawaythatallowstheintendedloadingcaseasdefinedwithintheRRD.IftheUUTisamodule,thenthefixtureshouldbeatestbuckthatisdesignedtosimulatethemoduleintegrationintothesystemforwhichitisdesigned.
Thefixturemusthaveatablecapableofindexinglocations(sizeofmotion)andprogrammable.
Theprobetipmustbegroundedwithanimpedanceof1ohmorbetter.
5.4Software
Thebuttoncyclercontrolsoftwareshouldbedesignedtotakeuser-selectablerecipefilesasaninput.TherecipefilesfullydefinesalltheTestParametersthatdescribethebuttoncyclingtest:
SuperCycle,Load Profiles…Inaddition,thebuttoncyclercontrolsoftwaremustbecapableofcountingthenumberofSuperCyclesandappliedLoadProfilesthathavebeenexecutedasdefinedbytheRRD.

GuidelinesforButtonCycleTesting
6.1SuperCycle
ThecombinationofLoadProfilesthatisrepeatedoverandoverduringthetestisreferredtoastheSuperCycle.Figure6.1illustratesthedifferentcomponentsoftheSuperCycle.

LoadProfile
Theloadprofileistheloadvs.timewaveformdefinedbythefollowingphysicalquantities:
PeakLoad,RelaxedLoad,LoadedDwell,PeakLoadDwell,andRelaxedDwell.TheshapeofthetransitionsbetweentheRelaxedLoadandthePeakLoadshouldbesmoothandcontinuousandmustbeapprovedbytheAppleRE.AnillustrationofoneperiodofabuttoncycleloadprofileisshowninFigure6.2.

UUTPositioning
TheUUTshouldbesecuredbythetestfixtureinanorientationthatenablesthebuttoncyclerProbetoapplyloadinthespecifiedLoadApplicationDirectionattheLoadApplicationLocationdefinedwithintheRRD.TheRRDshallspecifythenumberofcyclestobecompletedateachlocationandthesequenceoflocationswhenexecutingthetest.AnillustrationofaUUTpositionedforbuttoncyclingtestingisshowninFigure6.3.ThetestfixtureortestbuckshallbedefinedwithintheRRD.Thefixture,location,direction,andprobeshowninthisfigureisforillustrationpurposesonly.

2.AdjusttheUUTpositioningandtunethebuttoncyclingloadprofileuntilthestressparametersarewithinspec.
3.Carryoutbuttoncycling,stoppingateachreadpointforinspection.

RefertoproductRRDfordetailsconcerningthepass/failcriteria.
